What To Do With: The Signal Follower

Hi,
Just recovering from my temporary :panic: about the new version… The features are dazzling awesome! But what kind of cool stuff can you do with the signal follower? I’ve heard something about side-chaining, but how to do that in practice? For example: Do you control the volume of a beat inclusive the signal-followed channel? Or do you put stuff on a send-channel and control that whole “bus” whatever parameter?
Post your examples/ideas here please!

Track 01: Kickdrum
Track 02: Bassline

Put the signal follower on the kickdrum track. Then you can setup the signal follower to control the volume, or any other parameter of any device, of Track 2. Just try it, it’s easy.

how does one make it so you cant hear the kick, but it’s still activating the signal follower?

Muting the channel :)

OF COURSE!

Put a gainer after SF in your dsp chain and bring the gain down to -inf. np

Ah I see, typically you invert the min max parameters of the SF?

thats the best way because its automatable, whereas mutes aren’t… i think?

Hi Knetter
That’s exactly what I did, too. Moreover, you can adjust the lookhead value … sounds more obvious then.
I opened a thread about the signal follower sidechain compression.

Im right about finishing a sample pack for #46. Will I hear another tune from you ?

Best regards and happy new year

alternatively (do this quite often): Insert a gainer and set gain to -INF

You can also use the Signal Follower as a more fluid gating effect, by placing it on a track directly followed by the gainer it’s controlling (on the same track), then tweak to give your track more punch. The same goes for EQ, though I suggest using the mastering EQ instead of the EQ5 because for some reason, the EQ5 seems to inject “dirt” into the mix when tweaking the band gain.

Other uses: Ducking reverb levels on a track’s attacks, so as to make the track verby but still punchy. I particularly like using it with lofimat2 to add more dynamic digital distortion to tracks. Using it on distortion has its merits too, but I’m still trying to figure out the best way to make nasty with distortion. Using it with filters is alright, but not as impressive as i’d hoped. Ringmod offers some unique possibilities. Also, I’ve used it with stereo expanders for some interesting stereo effects.

I have other cool uses, but I’m keeping those to myself, because I really don’t want to give em up :P … they’re just too cool.

The important thing though, is to experiment. Don’t be afraid to chain it to your synths via the automation device… you may find it’s the device that changes your sound forever.

Good hints, thx Bytesmasher … now I’m really curious about your secret uses ;-).
Generally I think the possibilities of SF are enormous.

They mostly involve 3rd party plugins

Try this out: Signal Follower -> LFO Reset
Works best on drums :)

and the LFO controlls… what? :)

the nexus of existance ?

The almighty LFO controls all! Go forth and modulate, brother! May the parameters smile upon you!

Doesn’t matter. It may control what ever you want.
The trick is just triggering LFO with audio

or you can use the follower to make a vocoder… http://www.renoise.com/board/index.php?sho…c=23362&hl=

a good trick is to control a hydra’s input slider with a signal follower on the kick track. then you can control volume on multiple channels with one SF!

likin this idea!
