When Renoise is in ReWire slave mode the 'play from cursor position' function (normally assigned to the Apps key) does not function as expected.

A green play-head bar is inserted into the pattern at the point at which the pattern was stopped, then no matter where you cursor to in the pattern the re-start will always happen from
the green bar position (as you would expect when you have pattern follow set to false).

I am not sure if this is a new behaviour or if it has been around for many versions (or indeed if it is the expected behaviour).... but it's certainly very inconvenient.

Cheers

Hey Thal,

which ReWire master are you using Renoise with? Did this already happened in older Renoise versions?

The master, in this case, is Ableton Live.
Unfortunately I am not sure if this behaviour was present in previous versions.

I will endeavour to test it with Cubase and Studio One today.

(edit) -

Ok, I have made some more tests and I have found that the 'play from cursor' function works fine in both
Studio One and Cubase 5. In Ableton Live it will only work as expected if Renoise is *not* in edit mode.
If edit mode is engaged then the replay will always start from the green bar. When not in edit mode the Apps key
begins play from the cursor position as expected.

Interestingly, when not in edit mode, the space-bar starts replay from the cursor position as well! (but only when Ableton
Live is the master ReWire app). Strange.

It seems strange that the mode in Renoise (edit/non-edit) would effect the way the transport behaves when slaved to Ableton Live.

Tried this with Live 8.2.1 now here and could not replicate. Live and Renoise always start from the correct position, with or without record mode on.

Does that really always happen for you with record mode enabled in Renoise?
ReWire master may neglect repositioning requests from the slaves at any time. Some hosts don't support repositioning while playing for example. So it "may" happen from time to time that some other

Would be great if someone else could try this as well on his setup so we can find out more about this.

How is the mode in the audio preferences set? Bars and beats or full transport?
And how is pattern follow mode set?

I have it set to 'Full Transport Sync'. Pattern follow mode is true.

Here is a test for you to perform, if possible:

1 - Load Ableton Live 8.2
2 - Load Renoise and confirm connect as Slave
3 - (edit mode OFF) cursor down to beat 16
4 - engage edit mode with ESC
5 - cursor up several beats

When I perform the above steps I see a green bar across the pattern editor at beat 16.

Please let me know if you guys get this behaviour also.

Many thanks
Thal

Hey Taktik - Yes, this happens all the time.. not just occasionally.

Hmm. Really have no clue what's different on your setup then. Doing what you described above works perfectly here.

Checkpoints:
Live Version, Edit Mode, Pattern Follow Transport Sync Mode (tried them all - and combination)

Tested on windows only so far. Do you use OSX? (SHOULD not make a difference either though)?

I am using Windows 7.

Can you confirm that you *did not* see the green bar when you cursor back up from beat 16 after engaging edit mode?

I think what is really interesting about this is that when edit mode is OFF the space-bar plays from current cursor position, and does not
restart pattern from zero as expected. Curious eh!

I don't understand what you mean with "*did not* see the green bar when you cursor back up from beat 16 after engaging edit mode"
But tried all variations of pattern follow/record play and repositioning ReWired to Live.

The green bar always shows up in recording mode with pattern follow enabled. It also always shows up when pattern follow is disabled.

---

If this only happens with Live as ReWire master, and also not on every one's system, all I can do is thinking about the problem, and double checking the relevant parts in Renoise. Have done so, but still no clue why exactly this happens for you and what we could do to fix this. Sorry.

Hi, im not sure if we are talking for the same problem, but i tried renoise rewired with cubase 5 .I made one pattern. When i hit play (in renoise) ,the playback always begins from the last note in the pattern.
And in cubase, if i move the cursor to the beginnig (bar one) and hit cubase' s play ,the same thing happens: i hear first the last note of the pattern .

Also, if i make two patterns, and hit play while being in pattern one, I hear first the last note of the second pattern.
And if i hit play while being in the second pattern , i hear first the last note of the first pattern.

(Sorry for my confusing english)
(That was for renoise 2.5.1)
