Is it possible to have a toggling MIDI button for the record function ? Just like the UI button: first click turns record on, second click on same turns recording off. There’s a nice record button on the controller I use and it’d be nice to toggle recording just the same.

Try Control/Cmd + M and then click the recording button and then hit the button on your controller…
If your MIDI controller is outputting standard MMC messages, then the Play, Stop, Record, etc. buttons should simply work out of the box with no special mappings required. That’s the case with my Novation controller anyway. What gear do you have? Maybe your controller does support it, but it’s simply turned off somehow?
