how to go from "mute jam" to sequenced track?

So the other day I had a really cool jam session where I hooked up the pads on my MIDI controller to the track mutes in Renoise. I think this is a pretty common way to do things. It was really fun just playing a single loop I made and turning things on and off in real time.

Basically I recorded a session where I just jammed out on the mutes and recorded the track live, and I was able to record a track without painstakingly sequencing out the track in the pattern sequence editor.

Anyways, it made me wonder, it would be pretty ideal to be able to RECORD these mute on/offs while the loop is playing, and then use them to generate a sequence. Then I could go back and edit the sequence. It would speed up track-making so much to be able to just jam-out the track live, and then go back and edit the sequence. Anyone have any good tips on how to do something like this?

Yes, you can do this with the tool Live Dive

http://www.renoise.com/tools/live-dive

Each track is represented by a clip and you can play/stop each clip (this is like muting/unmuting a track). Not even for the currently running pattern but for up to 8 different patterns in your song. So you can mix tracks of e.g. 8 different patterns. All your actions can be recorded to a song.

That tool likes great, thanks! I’ll definitely try it out.
