Gating samples via the editor grid?

Is it possible to silence playing samples by kinda blocking the sound of individual grid cells? I’d like to go for that Drukqs choppy sound, like the gated synths at the end of Meltphace 6, can you chose to cut the sound on a currently running sample on a cell, and then it could be unmuted effectively on cells where you don’t specify the sample to be muted?

The pattern matrix (grid cells) can’t be hijacked to perform this kind of thing - they are simply a way to turn on/off a pattern-track within the song.

If you want the strobing/gate effect to be selective (on some samples in some tracks, but not others), all you would need is to insert (and automate) a gate on those tracks. And to have instant access, buy a cheap MIDI controller and record your tweakings

I think this Doofer by QiTaNo might be handy?

Sorry, I think I mean the pattern editor? I used to track in about 97-ish with old ModPlug, but I’ve never been very good and I still don’t get the words right  Can you use a kinda volume 0 and volume full in the edit window without the sample/instrument stopping and restarting, but rather just gating via volume?

Absolutely. You can enter volume into the volume column, right next to the note.

This will always work on samples, and also with plugins that support polyphonic aftertouch (many do, but not all…)

Doing it for a single note

C-4 01 -- <- no volume means maximum (80 is implied)
--- -- 00 <- turning down volume to 0
--- -- 80 <- crank it back up to max
--- -- 00 <- and so on...

If you need to do it for several notes at a time (chords?), it might be easier to use the note-volume command

M80
M00
M80
M00 <- and so on...

Note that putting commands directly into the pattern will not allow you to use faster gates than your LPB value.

If you need a really fast gate and don’t want to increase your LPB, just consider the other techniques I mentioned.

Thanks, I’ll give this a go when I get my pad into Renoise, and see if it works or not!

Loving this gater doofer, I’m just not sure how to adjust it to get 16th and 32nds? I’ve managed to get something with the frequency knob hidden in the doofer, but it doesn’t stay in sync with the track?

I think it might actually be because the LFO is dependent on which part of the song you press play at. Is there anyway of globally syncing the LFO so it sounds in sync no matter where the track begins play from?
