Real (MIDI) instrument grabber / wrapper

Hi everyone.

I really like the plug-in grabber / render to sample functionality. Sometimes it does not render a vsti that well, but most of the times it is really useful.

What I’m missing currently is the ability to not only render vsti’s but real hardware instruments to sample. I have a few hardware synthesizers that I use in some of my projects, but while on the road, those are not with me so I cannot continue to work on those projects that rely on my hardware synths. I could sample them manually, but the automatic note/velocity sampler is so powerfull.

In ableton live there is this ‘external instrument’ thing that you can use to wrap an external instrument (midi in / sound out).

It would really help if renoise could have something like that. Select a ‘plugin’ which defines a midi out and a line in which can then be also be used to grap to samples. Currently I select the midi out in the midi configuration section and add a Line-in instrument to the effects chain. This does not feel like a coherent external instrument. I like ableton’s approach in containing an external instrument in one box if you get what I mean…

I searched on the internet for a vst plugin that does this, but could not find it. Does it exist?

Anyone else having this desire or is able to do such a thing in another way, I’m very interested.

Thanks,

Bas

dread has written a tool that will act as an instrument grabber for anything

Hi thanks for the reply. When I searched for ‘dread instrument grabber’ I see that you pointed this out earlier: ‘https://forum.renoise.com/t/i-really-like-the-plugin-resampling-tool-but/43675’ . However there was no followup with a link or any more info on this. Can you give me any more info on where to find this tool?

I guess the link is lost in some other thread. But I have an older version with me.

Thanks for posting the xrnx. However I have not (yet) been able to get it to run. When dragging the file to Renoise, it is simply not accepted. I tried installing it manually in the tools folder. In the ‘tools’ context menu I can now see that it is loaded, however I can not find any button or menu item to enable the actual grabber…

Any ideas as to why the file is not accepted by dragging? Is it a version mismatch? I opened the manifest file and the api version is 4, that should be ok, since other tools that DO work also use version 4…

I tried both your files, the 4k one and the 14k one. Both same results.

Any ideas?

right click an instrument in the instrumentbox

I’ll just quickly point out why you had to manually install…

I think you’ll find that the reason Renoise isn’t allowing you to drag and drop the tool onto the window and install is because of the way the xrnx is packaged

^ ah indeed, must have incorrectly packed it in the hurry,

just open the xrnx with any archiver or change the .xrnx to .zip and drag the folder inside into the renoise window

Thanks guys. I got it to work now. I think it already installed correctly when I did it manual. Just didn’t know I should right-click the instrument. When repackaged without the folder in the zip file, the drag n drop also works.

Now to just figure out exactly how this thing processes my instrument, but that’s the fun part :).

Thanks a lot!

Would be cool to see such functionality embedded in the official renoise though.

I guess the link is lost in some other thread. But I have an older version with me.

Hey, thanks, man. This takes some of the boring work out. Maybe I’ll dig up some of our stuff and re-do some oscillator sampling now.

@taktik: Any chance to see this integrated into the builtin grabber for the 3.1 release?

Guess not…

Guess not…

LOL. Where can I get now the recent version ofdread’s intersument grabber tool?

EDIT: toblerpone fixed the tool downloads.
