is there a built in cheat sheet?

i did a search and the page in the wiki was deleted that says how to do a note off.

i spent a month trying to learn renoise a year ago, but i never figured it out completely, so i got frustrated and left for about a year. now i am trying again, and i forgot how to make a note off event. a few things like this are user memory based it seems, and I wonder if there is a sort of mnemonic way to remember the shortcuts, or a cheat sheet inside the renoise program.

From the Quick Start Manual in the Patterns section: The [Caps-Lock] key is used for NOTE-OFF.

That being said, I’m slowly working on a keyboard overlay and cheat sheet myself. Lots of short cuts to remember …

Cheers…

By default, note off events can be inserted into the pattern editor with Capslock or the A key. (Make sure that edit mode is enabled)

Pro tip: If you know the name of something but not its key binding, simply search for that keyword in the keyboard preferences.

It’s probably best advice for programs with lots of shortcuts. When still programming and learning new shortcuts a lot, quick one accessible key as shortcut that opens options (preferably keyboard options if software permits) is a must because for short while this menu is going to be one of the most needed things in a program.

As for being confused with lots of shortcuts I can’t speak for majority but finding a balanced rhythm was key for me. If you’re overwhelmed Amateurtools, don’t think about shortcuts so much. When you do something for the 10th time in a short period , you’ll for sure at that point already realize that you need a good shortcut for that. Make it, work with it until it sinks in - it will probably take less time than you think since repeating something often quickly imprints it into the brain even if someone has poor memory. Wait for next discomfort forcing you to work out a shortcut, make it, continue. Next one, next one and so it goes.

It’s a never-ending process for me, there’s always something that can be done faster in programs like Renoise. Workflows change as well with more time spent making music and shortcuts need to migrate to different keys to accomodate that.
