Renoise vs FL Studio

After a month of using Renoise I went back to FL Studio to see the difference. Wow. I can’t go back. I thought I’d miss it mainly due to piano rolls but I can get ideas into Renoise quicker between my keyboard and MIDI controller now. Once you get used to Renoise good luck going to something else. Not gonna happen.

In fact the computer keyboard with all the shortcuts makes things blazing fast on Renoise. This guy Shaydpa (sp?) has a great YouTube vid showing him throwing a whole complicated song down in 5 minutes. That’s why I like Renoise.

Great job team Renoise.

The difference to me is the same as between using a text editor and a paint program to write a novel. It’s different when you use a controller, but painting notes with the mouse always felt cumbersome to me. Matter of preference, though. Some things can be done more easily (or rather, more visually) in a horizontal DAW than a tracker.

Renoise is awesome, very comfortable and fast… until you decide to record some live performance. Then it start sucking ass very hard. I’m not blaming Renoise devs though, they’re doing great job and trackers werenever designed for that. I was trying Ableton and Reaper recently, guess I’ll stick with Reaper for audio recordings + Renoise for drum programming (through Rewire).

Yeah, thats the reason why i like renoise so much. You can do alot without mouse.

Yeah I have many problems if I work with gear. Beacause if I want to writing many channels parts to audio clips I can’t used many channels for recordings. It’s not a big problem but some time adding time to my work. Thnx renoise team, you presented me patience. LoL. I hope my words adding napalm to the ass any faithful guys. Hahahahah.

It’s a not. Many functions and commands don’t have logic. Just for the things: show and hide track DSP need to use 2 shortcuts (1 to open 2nd to close) it’s not useful for me because if I want used just hot keys I need saving much more. Hot keys need to simple work.

What do you mean they don’t have logic? Just because you don’t see the logic doesn’t mean it’s not there. You can also customize the keys to your likings if you don’t like them the way they are by default.

Because I think it’s logic used one shortcut for any move (show/hide/focus) I working many years in the finalcut with video and this ideology working good.

Can you elaborate on how Renoise is bad for recording live performance? I’m not challenging you I’m just asking. I mean, surely you can just have audio out to an external hard disk recorder? But you want to record individual tracks separately?

  1. Anything you play on a MIDI keyboard instantly turns into a mess. A lot of new note and effect columns are generated, aftertouch and stuff like that go to effect columns, and any note may become recorded into any column, there is no any system behind it. The result is an “unreadable and uneditable mess” (c) gova

1a. If you played a note a bit too early before the first line of a pattern, it will record into a wrong pattern, and sometimes it’s not cool at all.

  1. Recording an instrument (e.g. guitar) is too much of a hassle. Multiple takes are not supported, editing a recorded sample is disjointed from editing the rest of a song.

  2. For some reason automation recorded with MIDI controllers is discrete, one point per line.

^ unreadable and uneditable mess

hey, that’s my phrase, yay

nvm misunderstood what exactly was meant by the 3ed line

I’m sorry, fixed

Regarding point 3: while recording an automation, Renoise will save values for the beggining of each line only, though it could do it more often, record values between lines.

Oh ok, then IDO want to add that you can only record 1 parameter at a time when recording midi CCs :stuck_out_tongue:

FL Studio’s mixer has some kind of invisible built-in limiter. It squashes everything and makes it sound terrible. Try to clip anything in there. It’s impossible. Not saying clipping sounds great but I want full control over my dynamic range!

We should definately have a serious Renoise VS FL Studio battle, a competition that proves which is the best, it’s the only way to settle this! :stuck_out_tongue:

@urbster1: it soft clips right near 0db and afaik it can be turned off.

@TheBellows: You betta check yo self, before you wreck yo self :c

FLStudio sounds very cold in comparison to Renoise. Warm analog sound, that’s only Renoise. ( A JOKE)

Learn how to properly use your mixer. There is no limiter squashing anything, except probably the Limiter on the Master channel, that’s comes with the default song template. Delete it, save template, done.

That made me spill my coffee.

I agree, in direct comparison between the both, Renoise absolutely has its points. That’s specially about workflow (in fact a number of workflows) and a commendable, significantly higher compatibility and stability in VST-handling and -management. But what some ppl are making up about sound quality here is utter nonsense. Most Renoise DSPs, with a very few exceptions, run the cheapest of cheap routines, that couldn’t sound more digital. Calling this sound “analog warmth” has to be the joke of the year. Considering sound capabilities and the actual end result FL is a completely different, way higher league than Renoise. But… it’s also way more pain [edit: and way less fun] to get to these results.

@Bit arts: On more than a few occasions I had people call the aliasing and artefacts from renoise ‘warm’

one more reason to never say that word
