This analog sounding bass-line

Hi guys! i’m requesting an help about building the sound of this bassline:

I KNOW that,at the base,it’s just a JUNO-style bass sound, but it sounds so powerful and tight,i couldn’t get close to it with any vsts. So maybe it’s done with an hardware synth or it’s processed in a way i didn’t catch…at this time i don’t even want to copy it,only want to know how it’s made…thanks.

That song sounds like it was done with hardware (drum machine and synths) from the 80s, but who knows these days, circuit modeling of analog synths has come a very long way (see u-he’s Diva). More than any other synth, the bass line reminded me of a Mono/Poly and I have a feeling you could get that sound, or very close, with the VSTi version of it from Korg. It’s a fairly “standard” “sequencer bass” sound, there’s one rather like it on my old JX-10.

Edit: yeah so I was curious, searched “Lazerhawk gear” in Google, turns out he uses all emulation (see 1/4 way down this page). He names TAL-U-No-62 and Arturia’s Jupiter 8 emu specifically: http://rossocorsarecords.com/2011/07/15/lazerhawk-profile/

Yeah i read that interview, but thought it was previous to the making of this track, but now i read it all and understood i was wrong. So ok,it’s emulation.and believe me or not,i always heard a mono/poly in it.Also maybe a SH-101.

Which kind of music do you make?

edit:no,the 101 sounds too much “bubbly”,the mono/poly fits really well for this flowing sequence sound;i always loved it,maybe just have to experiment with it a little more

It’s a 2 layer bass.

Both layers to me sound like a U-NO-LX + basic EQ + Multiband compression. Probably another (high-passed) chorus on top of the upper layer, additional to the internal U-NO chorus, because there are extra modulations & panning going on in the upper bands.

This is my quickshot at it: http://www.bitarts.de/temp/U-NO_bassquickie.ogg

Edit: This is a variation with tiny amounts of both layers sent to a preamp. Sounds even more brutal. http://www.bitarts.de/temp/U-NO_bassquickie_amped.ogg

You nailed the sound - as usual :walkman:

So, each layer is panned to the extreme left/right? That much I gather from the original, a huge stereo perspective which to my ears sound like voice doubling

Both are panned to the center. The upper layer uses both internal U-NO choruses + an instance of D16 Syntorus, running 2 pathes with full phase modulation and then set to 50% dry/wet. The lower layer uses the same sound as the upper layer, just with less noise added and only 1 internal chorus (I) turned on. All the rest is simple EQing and multiband compression.

thank you guys. Bit_arts,i think the sound you built is very close to the one of the song, but IMHO it still lacks the power and “solid-flow” of the original, which i labelled as a “non-software” quality, and which was the real quality i was looking for.

I don’t know what speakers you are listening on. Beside the results of my dynamics measuring, on my speakers and my headphones too, at least the amped variation has way more power and dynamics than the original. It’s just not compressed to death and drowned in amplitude-eating subbass. Same goes for the un-amped version, while I have to admit, that one sounds less defined. The point is, it was done in a few minutes and I described the way to get there. Everything else is about variations of EQing and compression.

LazerHawk uses FL Studio and nothing but that for his productions. There is for pretty sure no mixing-hardware involved.

Would you guys say that the core synth sound is a square wave or a triangle? I’m trying to learn to pinpoint it by ear. I agree, I prefer this sound. It sounds fantastic with the retro-futurism 80’s stuff going on these days.

i listened to it through my studio monitors…anyway, you gave me some valuable advices that i will put in practice for learning

The Juno 106/60 doesn’t have a triangle waveform. If there is any interest, I’ve uploaded the U-NO-LX preset I setup for this:http://www.bitarts.de/temp/LDBass1.pjunoxl

Keep freezing the Lazerhawk video til you get a frame showing the captivating dancer’s face. What the hell.

 They’re walking (dancing) among us…

Hm but there is kind of unison going on in the high layer (at 1:22). That what sounds a like synced a bit sometimes. That’s why I guess he used 8V instead Unolx.

But that kind of distortion? Is it tube? Sounds really nice.

I’m running both, the Jupiter 8V and the U-NO-LX. This sounds nothing like a Jupiter. It’s so obviously a typical Juno sound, it already hurts.

Yes i love that gritty distortion too

Little of almost everything, I don’t have any genre commitment. Lately I like making “normal” tracks in a specific, standard genre in Reaper, like 1:30 in length, and then violently remixing them in Renoise.

Anyway yeah it sounds to me like it might even be one of the Mono/Poly factory presets but maybe saturated and distorted a bit (the Mono/Poly plugin has all kinds of FX algorithms built in, including those). I don’t think he’s doing anything very fancy there, but it does sound great. I have the Korg Legacy plugs, it’s amazing how good they still sound after like 10 years and all the competition, you just have to work with them. I mainly use hardware and samples but they’re still my main software synths. I’m bored today so maybe I’ll see if I can replicate that bass patch in the MP plug.

great, i wait so curious, and yes, mono/poly is one of my favourite vsts and , i guess :), synths in general

Yeah, great indeed. I’m very curious too. Must have missed that factory preset. -_-

In the meanwhile just don’t forget to shave. Because there’s a quite good chance you’ll grow a very, VERY long beard, while you’re trying to get this sound out of a MonoPoly.

Bit_Arts,thanks for the U-No patch

Yeah yeah. I didn’t get around to it yesterday but maybe I’ll start this evening and around the time Renoise 10 comes out I should have something :badteethslayer:
