Win 10 or Win 7

I just got a new computer (Windows 10 Home) and Renoise (3.1.0) keeps crashing every now and then on a regular basis. I was wondering if I should buy Win 7 and which one: Home (€29,99), Pro (€34,99) orUltimate (€68,33)? I also have some older gear like Pod X3 and M-audio Ozone both lacking Win 10 drivers.

I’ve beenpreferringWin 7 Pro over home, though I don’t recall exactly why. I think it’s because home restricts certain admin options. I’ve never used Ultimate, and don’t think there’s ever been a case where I needed any extra feature not found in Pro. Anyways, for the extra 5 euros, go for it.

Before you replace Win 10 see about making a recover disk (or USB thing), or otherwise making sure that you can upgrade Win 7 to Win 10 for free if you change your mind in the future.

I have a Surface Pro 3 that came with Win 8.1. Didn’t care for the Win 8 UI (especially tablet mode). I put onClassicShell and Virtuwin and all was good. The exception was the change inWindowsFile Explorer. I prefer Win 7 for that. Even with Classic Shell the behavior on Win 8 and Win 10 is not the same. (I may need sticky notes for the change in keyboard shortcuts.)

On the Surface I decided to go for the free update to Win 10. It doesn’t feel much different from Win 8.1 (as I have it set up with Classic Shell, etc.). Since the SP3 had Win 8.1 Pro I got Win 10 Pro, so I have more control over automatic updates.

Meanwhile, on my desktop I have Win 7 Pro and at the last minute decided against the Win 10 upgrade. I have too much software set up to work as I want, and did not see a compelling reason to move to Win 10.

I would suggest that if you go for Win 7 make sure you install Microsoft Security Essentials.

I now have a new laptop that has Win 10. I’ll see if Renoise is stable over time. Still setting things up.

Here’s a breakdown of Windows 7 Editions– you’re really the only one who can know which one is best for you. If you don’t run any non-standard services (like an Active Directory Domain, IIS Webserver, Remote Desktop Server, etc), then Home is _probably_sufficient. Note the italics.

That said … personally, at this time I believe there are precisely two reasons to go Windows 10:

  • Virtual Reality - If you’re looking to game with a Vive or Occulous, then you’ll want DirectX 12, which I understand will only be available on W10.

  • Ubuntu Shell - If you’re a linux geek looking for a Windows box with a native shell … anyway, yeah that’s a thing.

[edit] p.s. – as mentioned by Neurogami … BACKUPS BACKUPS BACKUPS

I’d take win7 over win10 any day, at least for a offline music production station. best Win edition ever imho

i would say this isnt a windows or renoise issue. dont install drivers over windows update. disable it for every thing. install all drivers manually. you can use “driver booster free” for that task to make it more easy. from win update you wont get latest drivers. at the other hand its maybe good to install a older driver for a specific device, this apply often to gfx cards, i am not sure how much this apply for sound cards too.

Win10 sucks, but I am using it anyway (Win10 Home build 14393.321). Renoise 3.1.0 is perfectly stable. Audio was breaking under CPU load with native audio drivers, but ASIO sounds fine.
