Couple of computer keyboard related suggestions

When entering notes with keyboard it would be nice to be able to disable keyboard repetition completely. Maybe a new setting in the Keys preferences. I have hard time imagining a situation where you would want keyboard repetition when entering notes.

Another one I’d like is ability to have multiple shortcuts assigned to one operation. When entering new notes with shift on, so that new columns are automatically created, it sucks not to be able to change octave without releasing shift. If I could assign octave change shortcuts to both key and shift + key I wouldn’t have this problem.

  1. You could perhaps try to set your key repeat rate to a higher duration, to help prevent accidental notes from being recorded?

  2. Quite a few commonly used shortcuts do have secondary key bindings available — you can search for “2nd” to find them.

You can set the secondary increase/decrease octave key bindings to include shift, and it will happily work while entering chords.

I use this all the time. Entering kicks, for example. Hold down ‘z’ to fill in a pattern with evenly spaced kick drum notes. Same for some other rhythmic patterns. Sometimes a combo of 6 and 8. Would be crazy to have to keep hitting the key over and over.

I agree that at times this auto-repeat gets in the way, but I would look for a way to manage this in the OS, not in Renoise.

Nope. I like to have fast repeat rate for everything else, but would like to have none for note entering.

So general key repeat rate setting isn’t an option.

Oh, interesting. Where in Renoise do you use key repeat? (I’m curious about others’ workflow; for myself I cant think of where in Renoise I’d want to hold a key and have it repeat. Possible exception: the dev terminal/editor.)

So I’d be good with a command-line script that would set a slow/delayed key repeat for when I’m using Renoise, and another script to restore it to normal fast values when doing anything else. (This might get clunky if you’re moving about different programs at the same time.)

In poking around it seems Windows 10 at least has assorted options for managing key repeats through “bounce” handling and with some repeat delays.

Mainly arrow keys when moving from one point to another in single pattern in pattern editor and sometimes page up/page down when moving between patterns. I tried adjusting the repeat delay to maximum and navigating around pattern editor became very frustrating.

Ah. Good point. Yeah, tweaking the repeat settings can be a pain and quite unsatisfying in that case.

Necrobump, but as a long-time user of renoise I still really would love the option to turn off key-repeat on note input. I like a fast key-repeat for navigation purposes but I find myself having to enter all note values with a midi keyboard lest get get frustrated with the machine gun of sounds coming at me from trying to input data.
