First Impression : Reaktor is not worth the high price for me !

Hi folks,

I tried several modular approaches. Amongst them were SuperCollider, CSound, pd and lately something called overtone. And I liked all of them (CSound was the most capable IMHO), but I wanted something tightly integrated with my DAW of choice/workflow. And I am a working 60% on Linux and 40% on Windows, so Reaktor was for my Windows sessions (I dont want to install cygwin again).

I got Reaktor 6 for half of the price, so I thought it would be good deal. After 3 days of trying it out thoroughly I am not impressed. It is slow and it it has nothing, that pd doesn’t have. For 200 bucks it certainly sucks compared to all of the above alternatives.

So just as a warning for anyone considering buying it.

Have a nice day.

enough is enough

As someone who has Reaktor5, and barely scratched the surface as it was dirt cheap a long time ago - I’m interested as to what you wanted it to do that was dissapointing - or didn’t hit the mark? Slighty OT, but I bought Ableton after seeing lots of interesting tutorials that I liked the end result - but the workflow and just window layout killed any inspiration, so I’ve made very, very little with it.

Just the fact, that the other frameworks/modular environment I tried are all superior (just take a look at the CSound library). Plus they are platform independent. The only pro for Reaktor, that it is a VST. Otherwise there is nothing, that the other mentioned not also bring to the table.

So… can you recommend me any cheap modular environment with wide selection of realtime, zero-latency filters or pseudo-analog oscillators? Thanks…

If CSound does not suite your purposes you should look into Faust.

Edit : Overtone is also very promising, but I have to dig deeper. Actually it is just a refurbishment for SuperCollider with a nicer syntax :http://overtone.github.io/

Btw. : They all cost 0 amounts of money.

Try to create a 10 000 partial modal bank in pure data …with no c+ extensions …good luck .

Here are some of my ensembles

its a shame a trial / demo version isnt availabe so you could try before you buy

Yes its a shame. I’m back to CSound and Overtone and soon Faust. YMMV of course.

By the way you cannot transfer a license, if you have just acquired it from a third party (1 week ago). I can understand NI economically in that regard, but they really should put out Demos for their major (and therefore expensive) applications.

Ty. Ive tried Faust because i am interested in functional languages and it is beatiful thing but i cant do synth like with reactor there…

Keep an eye out for Loomer “Epoch”. (Probably not the final name. Named because it’s already half a decade in development already
and the old thread on KVR is the biggest one ever… Like 90 pages or so… -->

So there is a second thread now since a while, over 30 pages as well already… )

EDIT: And there still is PlogueBidule and the (pretty amazing) recently released Usine Hollyhock 3. (Which I use a lot actually)

I could not compile Faust2 (this one has a LOT of dependencies) inside my Manjaro-VM, where Jack is not working correctly anyways. I will install Faust1 on my Antergos-Laptop when I get home. If it fails I experiment further with Overtone (really easy installation) as I am learning Lisp atm anyways and have experience with Supercollider, but always hated the syntax.

I apparantly can transfer the license, but I have to do it manually (together with NI-service worker) instead through the interface. If anyone is interested, please let me know. I would also trade for a good synth (U-He).

This topic is surreal.

Reaktor is one of the best synth sandbox there is. There are so many gems in the reaktor community page… Moreover all the Komplete synths are made on this… which says a lot.

I come from the FLOSS world and I can say without hesitation that Reaktor slays, buries and erases all memories of Faust and Csound (and zynaddsubfx, and phasex and name-whatever-floss-synth).

I’m not questionning Rachman opinion, I’m just saying you shouldn’t listen

Hmmkay, can you name me one gem from the reaktor community page ? Perhaps I change my mind. Since when are Faust or Csound synths ? They are capable modular environments just like Reaktor. CSound is kind of the grandfather of Reaktor and the library is huge. (was huge 10-20 years ago) I don’t like the syntax of CSound either, but to get a nice working ensemble orchestrated together is about the same difficulty as in Reaktor. Only that Reaktor costs 200 bucks and CSound is Open Source.

Funny, i am learning LISP myself right now…

Btw. You are amazing coder or you haven´t explored Reaktor enough
I can´t imagine something like this with technologies mentioned:http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2015/12/18/reaktor-blocks-wired/

I tried this. What is so impressive about it ? I did not have much time. Maybe I just did not get it. Still not sold, so I have time to reverse my opinion.

Btw : Lisp is the mother of Scheme, Clojure and others and transitively also Javascript. If David Eich would not have been pressured by Sun (the company), JS would look a lot like Lisp instead like a bastard of Lisp and Java.

I don’t know what you’re into, so I can’t really help you. But the blocks do a terrific job oh emulating euroracks, if you own a synth you should try its virtual counterparts to compare. I own a minibrute, and it’s hard to tell which one is the real deal.

I love the serenade III… it’s one of the best virtual violin I know (tricky tho).

There’s some very neat amp sim… You know what ? Just dowload the TOP 20 most downloaded stuff and toy with it.

Also I know what faust and csound are, I’ve was a part of the linux audio dev community for a years.I’m just saying I’ve never found any great open source synth. And I’ve tried them all.
