Redux MIDI out?

Hi,

Can Redux phrases send MIDI out to control other plugins?

Cheers.

AFAIK Redux doesn’t have midi output. Some similar(ish) topics ->

Oh ok.

Thanks.

Sorry for bring this up again. But i think it still can be useful, even when sample fx commands are not possible. Atleast delay, velocity should be enough. Maybe some effects can be translated to MPE, too?

i think with midi out and supporting live recording , redux would become way more powerful than it already it

Shame this never happened.

( I’m using ReViSiT instead. )

the nr1 reason i want Midi out on redux is that i want to be able to chain redux pugins for for exponential complexity when it comes to randomly triggering notes and phrases.

If you use Reaper as a DAW you can also use this free plugin GitHub - JoepVanlier/Hackey-Trackey: A LUA tracker plugin for REAPER 5.x and up. Designed to mimick the pattern editor in Jeskola Buzz.

lol, I’m a (minor) contributor to that.

I’m just wondering whether we could use the Redux plugins somehow to encode MIDI note on and note off events as audio, and then create an ‘audio-to-MIDI’ VST to decode the audio back to MIDI inside the DAW? We could in theory fit two bytes worth of data into a single 16-bit sample. The decoding part could be written in, say the ReaJS language which is part of ReaPlugs, which is a free download. The decoder could detect non-zero information in the incoming audio stream and translate it into MIDI events.

Maybe we could use a key tracker and something like the formula device to encode the note on and off messages?

I’m not all the familiar with the Renoise devices, but just wondered if anyone who is more knowledgeable than me could think about whether this is feasible?

Pls, it’s been 6 years…

someday…

What a huge feature holding back the software. Hoping it happens one day. Also, a simple piano roll editor would transform this into the essential sampler plugin for many more people. And, with the Dracula skin Redux is one of the best looking plugins I own.

Thanks Fume I have that. I will check it out. Hmmm not sure what you mean by your post.

DAW choice is a separate topic. This topic is about making the Redux plugin the best it can be by fixing a few missing features.

This is not my idea. And, this thread dates back to 2017. MIDI out for plugins is now very common. Many plugins on the market today have this feature. (You can even find JUCE plugin tutorials that will enable a novice programmer to code plugins with Midi out.)

Until Redux has a MIDI out feature, the only work around I found was to use the plugin, MIDI Guitar 2, to convert Renoise Redux audio output into midi. It works ok. Sometimes it hits a wrong note or misses a note which gives the whole thing a sort of probability sequencer vibe. Make sure you set Midi Guitar 2 to monophonic mode. It makes a big difference. If anyone else has any other ideas about how to extract the data let me know. The only theoretical 3rd party solution I could imagine might be a custom audio-to-midi plugin trained to read a specific and expected audio file for each note that Redux would be made to play. Maybe sort of like how Serato DJ can decode the timecode vinyl.

I think we really need Redux to have MIDI OUT, as that would simplify the workflow. For example, a trick is to use a virtual MIDI cable to connect Renoise with another DAW, so we wouldn’t need Redux anymore, and I’ve done that, but it’s tiring to have to be making connections while making music, it just kills the workflow, and i guess is similar with your method. So, in conclusion, redux having midi out would be great…

Yes, Redux should just be useable as a phrase sequencer for any MIDI instrument, the same way Renoise does it: creating a MIDI instrument instead of a sample based one.
So I can use it to drive a drum kit on the Nord Lead, for instance.

Tracker based sequencing combined with live recording is very interesting.
Either it would need a classical DAW implementation within Renoise, or MIDI capability within Redux.

Although I do realise that it’s easier to speak about such implementations, than actually doing it.
It’s not a small feature.

Alternatively: create a 2nd VSTi purely for MIDI driven external instruments (either hardware or VST), which requires a separate license to cover the costs & effort for doing so. (Or make it an upgrade to Redux at extra cost.)
