Two noob questions (Rewire & sample placing)

Hi guys, I’ve got some questions.

  1. I use Reason for my synth sound design and stuff. Rewiring works like a charm, but I would like to make a sampled instument out of my rewired synth like you can do with VSTs and the plug in grabber. How do I do that with Reason?

  2. How do I place samples like risers and such where I know when the sample has to stop but I don’t know where it starts? Like I have a riser thats 2.7346 bars long and I want the build up to be finished at the end of bar 4. The way I do it now is to trial&error with delays and such until I get it right sounding. But there has to be an easier way.

Thanks!

ok for your second question…you can achieve this in different ways

1 - in the snap to (different options) in the upper right corner of the sample window set the snap to beats or 8th …so you can trim the remaining 0.7346 …an automat the volume to make it from 0 to - 80 volume

2 - this way is ma favorite…use the sxx command triggering the sample from S00 to SFF use Ctrl+I to interpolate the values…so you can make a 2 bars sample sound as a 4 bars…but …wth retriggering sound…which is kinda cool and is more original to me …

when i 1st started using renoise i believe this wasthe same question…i had back then…

3- use the rubberband tool to stretch the sample to make it 2 bars long

excuse my english…im natural spanish speaker

Question 2: if you have your song speed set - and the sample is just played back at original pitch without pitch slides or whatever - you can right click in the sample editor the scales either at the top or the bottom of the waveform. The Menu should read “OS Effect / Beats / Samples / Minutes”. Choose “Beats”. Then you see how long exactly the sample is in beats/bars. Add some silence to the beginning, so the peak is at the right position, say at 8:0, you can zoom in to get it very exact. I usually just copy some wave, paste it at the very beginning and hit the straight line button to make it silence, then nag off the right amount with the cut command until it is right. Then you place the note that will trigger the sound back by just the ammount of beats you see on the scale until the target peak. If you do pitch modulations or different playback speed than 1:1 c4 tempo, or whatever, consider resampling the sound so you can then apply this trick. No more trial&error. Works also for shorter sounds like reverse cymbals and snares. I you mess with the bpm of your tune, you will have to readjust the amount of added silence ofc. - The scale in the sample editor will instantly adjust when you mess with bpm, lpb…

Edit “nagging off the right amount” is actually less trial&error than it first sounds. If you use the lower scale bar set to beats, there will be shown how long your sample selection is in beats! so you can copy/paste/cut the desired amount by using selections and this value, or take a reading how long that selection from your peak to a desired location in beats actually is & work with it.

Thank you for your creative answers!

I especially like Land of Bits idea to use the Sxx commands, since if you play around with the commands and add others you can make a simple white noise riser very interesting and awesome!

Adding silence to the sample to make it the right length is an awesome idea, too! I’m going to certainly use it for reversed snares and shorter reversed samples!

Thanks guys! Your help is appreciated!

Regarding the first question, I don’t think it’s possible in Renoise?

However, it should be theoretically possible with “Extreme Sample Converter”. ESC can save XRNI, and can rip from hardware synths in a similar way that plugin grabber works. So, with some clever abuse of virtual midi ports + virtual audio cable, it should be possible to rip Reason synths and save as XRNI.
