import kontakt drum pattern in renoise

Hey guys,

I’m having a serious issue using some drum library from kontakt in renoise.

When i try to drag and drop a pattern from lets say “abbey road modern drummer” using the cross/compass button, i get several issues :

-The pattern doesnt fit the way i configure my tracks, i like having 96 lines divided in 4X24 (dont know if thats clear) per bar
usually only half the bar is filled with only part of the pattern.

-also the drag and drop creates a new track and the pattern is loaded at the end of my song, usually the last four bars.

-And finally the pattern doesnt play when i play the song, it seems separated from the instrument.

Im sorry if the explanation isnt very clear.

If anyone is using kontakt library drum pre-programmed patterns in renoise, could he/she tell me how to do it

I have not tried your setup yet, but from what I can tell it’s a midi file that is copied and pasted, which is what drag and drop operations do anyways(like passing a data structure to the clipboard from Kontakt, and then the dropping event sets off code in Renoise to copy the data from clipboard after parsing its intended file format, at this point Renoise can choose to ignore the dropped data as well if format is unsupported). I too use Kontakt from time to time, some of the libraries have an internal sequencer which works in tandem with Renoise, and the patches load up with the sequence data too so never had to explicitly drag and drop a midi file to again retrigger it back in Kontakt(double-retrigger lol). First check if there is a way to persist that sequence data within the Kontakt library too. That should help for future edits, ideally you should be making music and not struggling with how to transform data structures due to idiosyncrasies baked into software by every individual developer.

So just to be sure you can work with the midi file, try to do this on another DAW and see if the midi file is rendered well and that you can use Kontakt in the other DAW. Then save that midi file from the other DAW and open it in Renoise. At this point check if the note names and octave numbers are translated well. You may have to join and manually move pattern data to build a smooth linear sequence. Check the tempo and adjust LPB affordingly. Load the Kontakt vst and check if the triggered sample octave numbers align as well with the original Kontakt internal some mapping window becos sometimes Kontakt reads the input midi data by one or two octaves up or down, if not then transpose. Once you work out the differences, it should be easier to figure out what to fix.

Or you could just bounce the audio and mangle it in Renoise which is what it’s made for, similar to MPC or any other beatboxes…less midi and more audio and FX. This process is called sampling, which can use midi to generate the sound but the midi itself is not used after that part.

Renoise still handles midi better than say OpenMPT and that should be leveraged. A separate tutorial on how to best use midi should be posted in this forum somewhere…

You could try drag n drop on a Phrase window if it works (not tried, just conjecture).

You can start by sharing your experiences.

Hm, MIDI import isn’t that flexible when it comes to tempo. But it sounds like you could benefit from the flexible pattern resizer to rework those patterns:

Or, as encryptedmind points out, paste them into a phrase, allowing independent LPB from your song.

A tool like PhraseMate makes this a bit easier - once you figure out how to use the tool, that is

-And finally the pattern doesnt play when i play the song, it seems separated from the instrument.

Renoise treats MIDI from the Kontakt instance the same as any piece of MIDI coming from “somewhere”. In other words: Renoise isn’t smart enough to know that the MIDI is originating from an hosted plugin instrument, and doesn’t ensure that the notes written to the pattern are in fact referencing that same instrument.

There are a few options for importing MIDI though - here is what the docs have to say:

compare and correct (transpose +/- 12 notes) the middle C between renoise and kontakt or any other sequenzer
take the bass drum (normally C)

check the kontakt sounds

are the drum mapping are complies to the general midi standard? (when yes it saves you the time to check all the note assignments yourself)

Thx a lot for all those solutions, i will try them out and check wich one is less time eating. As you said encryptedmind, i dont want to spend time resolving issues but rather create some music .
