When I have the ‘follow playhead’ turned off, and the playhead is somewhere off screen, is there a hotkey or so I can press to jump the cursor/screen to the current playhead position?

You could quickly double-tap Scroll Lock to turn pattern follow on and then off again 
… and starting playback with Shift+Space …
