Routing midi via Rewire

Haven’t ever had to do this. But am currently struggling to route midi from Renoise to Cubase and from Cubase to Renoise while in Rewire.

I thought it would be pretty simple. Renoise doesn’t seem to show up on the Cubase Midi outputs/inputs.

Does anybody have any ideas… I can provide screen shots

Thanks

I’m pretty sure Rewire doesn’t provide MIDI, it’s audio-only. So to use MIDI, you use some kind of virtual MIDI loopback (OS X has one built-in when you look at system MIDI preferences). You use that virtual device for MIDI and rewire to sync transports / route audio.

Thanks, I appreciate your response. However, it looks as though Rewire shares midi – it is audio and midi

The Steinberg link includes the instructions to route midi via rewire. Renoise does not, “automatically show up,” in that drop down box

Have you managed to get audio to work via Rewire?

Audio works fine. Btw, pat might not be wrong either. I seemingly remember something like this from years back. However, that may just be an OS x thing. On windows this may very well be possible… I am not sure

Edit —

Even with LoopbMidi I can not seem to get it to work. The midi in Cubase should be triggering the VST Strobe hosted in Renoise - right?

I don’t know if this is what you want but yesterday I had to disable my midi keyboard in Cubase so Renoise could work with my keyboard.

Are you wanting both Cubase and Renoise to get your midi events?

I’m trying to figure out a way to use the chord pad features, and the chord assist features, and then record progressions into the pattern editor for further manipulation

So you need a sort of “midi use and forward” ability. There’s got to be a way of doing that with something like midiox… configure Cubase to send to a virtual midi device and have Renoise receive input from the same device. I’m just a beginner with that stuff but I’d definitely be looking into third party midi routing programs unless a guru on here can give you s solid piece of advice. I’m a programmer so I just see that it should be doable.

Maybe… I’ll check them out when I get a chance.

Thanks

Rewire MIDI is one way from Host → Slave (somewhat annoyingly, as this doesn’t let you use Rewire to add a tracker-type sequencer to your normal DAW (another argument for MIDI-out on Redux, or a Renosie-as-VSTi plugin, but anyway…))

Although according to the Renosie manual it doesn’t work either way if Renoise is the slave, is this actually the case ?!

Note: To send MIDI data to a Renoise slave you will have to use virtual loopback MIDI cables.

Its the case. I remembered after I made this thread, I had this same question years ago - I’m getting senile

Well that sucks. (The lack of MIDI as slave, and the getting senile  )
