a future competition maybe

just toying with the idea of a new competition to give more life to the forum and get more music made with renoise out there !!!

what failed with the previous competition

1 - one genre competition its not always good since not everyone are into all different types of music

2 - the rules were a bit unclear i think too many people were asking the same questions like which sounds they can use or whatever

3 - thats it

to get some useful ideas out of other successful compos here like MBC ////

-making a new competition with multiple genres to choose from and based around a theme or topic rather than just one genre

its always going to be better …more poeple involved etc

  • using just renoise for me its the best way to manage project file sharing so other participants and people in the forum can deconstruct later on such projects !!!

i want your input in this guys

post ideas can be taken out of other competitions to try and make a new competition much better than the previous one

Did someone mention money (and a lot of it) in the prize(s)? Nah, that couldn’t possibly be an incentive factor

I would appreciate limiting rules. I find “Renoise instruments only” yet not limiting enough, since more limits can result in more fun. What about a chiptune preset set, single cycle samples only or so?

i thought about the same thing like synthesizing all the instruments from the initial single cycles that come with renoise and we can narrow it to use only saw or square type waves jjjj

that would be pretty coool

and you need a sine for the kick too

u need no sine, just filter on saw/sq :w00t: yah the harsh kix going on

u need no sine, just filter on saw/sq :w00t: yah the harsh kix going on

One needs no sine, no other samples, just triger DC filter on/off - on/off … … and filter it with hi Resonance 4pMoog filter - Use Key Tracker to mach Cutoff to Notes.

So here is an idea for a competition - New Rules: No VST/AU/etc…, No Samples - Only native Renoise efx. Absolute Minimal style. B)

i think one lil sine its not going to damage a chiptune sample pack jjj

according to FFX using only renoise its not limitation enough!!!

lets make an entire song out of a saw and square waveform

thats my compo with hardcore limitations …

you can use any FX you want that comes with renoise of course

you cant resample… each instrument needs to be crafted out of a saw or square waveform

some usual restrictive rules :

  • use a maximum of N columns

  • use only the samples of a sample pack

  • use only renoise native instru and effects

  • tempo must be nnn BPM

  • genre must be electro / pop / rock / etc…

i also like when there is a theme/subject/topic to respect (like in the MBC)

even if the interpretation of the theme is very subjective, it forces you to think about the theme, and sometimes helps to compose something that is not in your habits

i like deadlines of one month

i like when votes are only by those who participate the contest

for contest with VST allowed, i prefer when free VST only are used, to be able to download them and play the XRNS by yourself in Renoise

the new competition its going to adopt this ideas

specially the theme idea

its really inspiring !!!

as for genres a few genre picks for each round can be interesting so that the contestants can choose but at the same time there is some consistency

I think that the competition should be genre free really and that we shouldn’t be limited in any ways just for the vsts, but for samples we should be free to use whatever we want, because everyone have a method of work.

i also support this idea

but the best aspect of having a limitation its that every other contestant its going to have the same limitations

as you

also a less is more approach …its for sure the best way to discover the true potential of renoise

if someone makes a banger out of single cycles imagine with full capabilities

Is the point of the competition to see who’s the best, or to have fun and get a nice selection of tracks from the community?

If for fun, then I’d leave it more open ended with the waveform restrictions.

If for badass bragging rights, then go nuts with super specific genre and wave restrictions.

For relative newbs like me, I just want to have fun and see what new sounds I can eek out of my synths and equipment. I’m not going to thrash anyone in songwriting or in next-level-renoise-manipulation…

I think, well, it can be all 3 together.

For me - super limited - restricted - minimalistic is the current personal preference. I want to see what can be done with less.

edit:

Here example what I like:

[sharedmedia=downloads:files:715]

i think i gather enough info

its good to see people interested in this topics since at the end we are all here because of the music you can make with renoise

ill be posting something about the compo …

by next week

need to gather all this info in a paper …and add a bunch more stuff

And a better voting mechanism please. You could make some categories to vote (e.g. mix, sound design, composition, overall glue, emotion), which could be interesting for the participants.

I like the idea of a topic, too.

what do you think

each contestant has 2 votes

one for

best arrangement

best sound design

basically

if you think an entry deserves the 2 votes then that producer gets 2 votes for him

so then its going to be 2 winners unless a genius appears and gets all the votes :badteeth:

Hm, maybe more like 1-5 stars for each category and each artist? I don’t like binary voting too much… :smashed: This is only my 2 cents.

well i particulary like the poll method for voting each one gets a vote !!

its easy to keep track of that and the vote can be switched at any time in case …anyone change their mind

so you have to be …the best to win

But then it is not so interesting for the non winning composers. It would be nice if everybody could get a feedback by many. Fuck the winners, who is interested in them?

Themselves, the selfish bastards.
