lemme know…

mlon

there’s too much offbeat (clips, etc.) i dunno if you’ve put it there on purpose, but still it’s annoying as hell. other than that i cant find a theme whatsoever (not that it’s a rule that there’s supposed to be a theme.) but ok. i’ll be honest; this song is not going anywhere… it’s just samples mixed in patterns and I cant find anything interessting in it except the drumbeat/voice. it needs alot of work.

maybe you cant stand it becoz im such a beat master…

uh…hehe…kidding ! :)

yup theres allot to learn…so…u show me ! :)
im sorry you dont like it…
whats the thing that annoys you most? lack of theme, the beats or everything?

as i said it was just a test.

mlon

As a generic approach I can say that doesn’t really sounds more than a test :)
More than else, I’d say that you should decide what are you going to do.
This will help you, at least, to remain consistent within the same song.
Read: your tune sounds in the very beginning like some hip-hop track… but with a slow and “ambient-like” bass that instantly kills any “groove” going on.
(Nothing a beat-master would like, anyway)  ;)
 then it turns out it could be some trip-hop but the beat is definitely different and now sounds like some electro-jungle…
The whole sounds like… well, like you don’t really know from the beginning what direction you want your song to go :)

Suggestions?

  1. Decide what half of the song you intend to build around
  2. Kill that new-age-crystaltherapy bass and pick something else instead.
  3. Define a structure or a direction -before- starting composing… not at half of the process ;)

Umm, after listening I must say that it starts off nicely (the beat slicing is not annoying in my ears) but personally I’d introduce some vocals in stead of the strings/strange beat/off key lead that enters around 1:30. And when I say vocals i don’t mean the sample you have alread, I mean REAL vocals telling a story of some sort. :)

And I also like the bass! So there! :D

So, in short: Good potential up until 0:55! Then goes loonybin.

thnx all for your constructive replies :)

thats stuff i can work with…

mlon

ooh and about vocals…

its not like i have a girl with a good voice in my basement locked away…
so…how do you guys get original vocals in your songs?

i cant sing and wont so…i am somewhat limited to samples.

thnx,

mlon

everyone can sing MLoN :P just use vocoder. hihi

Just use Antares Autotune. It worked for that bitch Cher!

 :D

hehe…

btw. if anyone wants to try to mash it up so maybe i can learn some from it,
(or just want a certain sound from it…)…just ask…ill be happy to upload and hear some results or whatever…! :)

mlon

ps…oh…and what stuff do you guys listen to normally? just interested… :)

Boards of Canada, Lusine, Telefon Tel Aviv, Arovane, Donnacha Costello, Autechre, Bola, Chris Clark, Aphex Twin, Esem, O Yuki Conjugate, Speedy J, u-Ziq, etc. Basically a lot of IDM and ambient stuff.

As well as a lot of drum&bass mixes with tracks by a lot of random producers (Teebee, Noisia, Cause 4 Concern, Bad Company, Concord Dawn, Raiden, Rawthang, Stakka & Skynet, etc).

Some electro and retro stuff as well, by people such as Legowelt and Royksopp.

Also some experimental/arty/indie rock stuff such as Godspeed You Black Emperor, Explosions In The Sky, The Shins, etc.

And all kinds of other random stuff :P

Well… I both sing and have a girl locked in the basement
Not just any girl… one who teaches modern singing in music schools…
So anytime I need vocals I have both choices but usually I try to have Barbara involved.
Curious? You can check for her “singing skills” by listening to her demos.
The base is from some crappy midi file but all vocals are done by Barbara

I just call Sewen… :D

Also, I’ve got this girl with amazing talent running sining mostly dull songs I’m trying to get into my style of music, she’s already sung on a track of mine as a test, and I loved it…

No samples this time, folks. :P
I tend to throw them out way to early, gotta stop that…

Oh, and I agree with Sewen, EVERYBODY can sing to some extent, but if you can’t get anything usable out of neither your writing or singing, try looking for people in your area who sing via some online chat thingie. Usally works.

I like this, its a bit like jazz, I also liked the beat.
Don’t think there is too much offbeat.

I don’t think music allways has to have a theme, it could just as well be a ambient soundscape that travells in some direction.
