free audio editor for large .mp4 files?

Does anyone know of a free audio editor that can open large 1gb+ .mp4 files? I’m trying to sample some sounds from a film, I’ve tried doing it in Renoise but I don’t have enough ram.

you can use vlc for extracting the audio from mp4 files as a wav or flac or mp3 or whatever…add the file to vlc’s playlist then right-click the file and select save…select the encoding preset you desire…and location to save to…voila…

After extracting the Audio (you can also try FormatFactory http://format-factory.softonic.de/) I recommend the great open source audio editor “Audacity” to split the sample into several parts:

You can just select the range and then save the selection to a new sample.

yes sir, if something needs to sample from a movie vlc wins!

first i was suspicious because of the generic sounding name, but AVC (any video converter, free version) has rescued me from messing around with avidemux or fiddling with vlc and failing. also, their Any Audio Converter is extremely useful as well. both of these are ‘i cant believe its free’ things.

You can import mp4 and other movie files directly into Audacity, then chop it and export it to any filetype. You may need to install the ffmpeg codec pack, but once you’ve set it up, it works any time.
