Make track muting automatable just like in Reaper.
If the automation surpasses 50% the track counts as muted.
Or just limit the envelope interpolation type to point.

L00 and LC0 do the trick for me, although this is a true mute (cuts all fx tails etc)
Good for stutter fx on a per track/group basis as well

Personally I usually use what I call a « full cut » gainer, gainer at -INF (end of effect chain) where I automate the active / inactive state
