Brainstorming about Renoise contests

Feel like that if a compo is re-occurring, on a regular frequent schedule, and doesn’t last too long;
it may grow over time and become something that people could look forward to. Specific twists for
the events could help to keep things interesting.

I like the idea of a single sample contest or compo. I took part in one where the limitation was a single sample under a second long. It was on a noise music forum so most of the tracks were kind of abrasive but I was able to get a cool ambient thing out of it.

Hi, not going to bring much to the topic, but just dropping by to say that in case of a new contest, even though there are almost no chance I enroll, I would try as much as possible to listen to all contributions!

It’s been a while since there was a song contest or a jam on this forum
Anyone interested ? Or maybe this happens on Discord ?

Some ideas :

  • only use white noise and sine waves (inspired by Doom 2016 soundtrack)
  • only use one track (think about linear drumming but for an entire song)
  • ambient/beatless music (because trackers are mainly known for breakbeats)
  • cadavres exquis
  • using PTTRNS
  • etc

OK, Well… 20-30 years ago when there was little way to cheat & egos weren’t quite what they are today contests worked somewhat… just send in that song file!… So to have that nowadays you’d need ‘no VSTi-VST, just internal FX’… An XRNS will be given to all who want who wish to enter that will have samples in it, make do… When done submit the XRNS back…

And probably most importantly & not much discussed is a renoise user that is versed in all types of music (can make anything, techno, folk, ethnic, jazz, fusion, rock, trance, moloch, cinematic, ambient, etc) that will judge entries… One that can ‘hear past the FX’ to listen to what is being played… Such a desktop musician would have no prejudice unlike one who does only hiphop thus the best at hiphop would be tops…

Even better yet is to not use renoise at all but an actual retro tracker that makes it much simpler plus weeds out cheaters or those without the ‘gumption’ to learn…

Now concerning the ideas, I prefer the contests with a theme, a soundpack, but no technical limitations, and no genre limitations. That way the contest can interest all kind of musicians, noobs like me or professionnals, and won’t be a chiptune only or a jungle only or a breakcore only thing, or an elitist thing where you need 10 years of daily practice to make a contribution.

You can use VSTis as soon as you print them to audio

Asking for a portable Renoise file (ie no plugins) for a Renoise jam seemed like the least I could do.

And perhaps I’m naive, but I didn’t expect cheating in a context where there’s nothing to gain except keeping the community alive.

Even though this is MANWE & Schism Tracker it’s about gettin’ up ready doin’ for a contest & in the end all his samples were immediately ripped off (takes it well)…

This vid just 2 months old…

These Russian Schism Tracker Guys are the bomb, They must eat their wheaties over there… Wait, NOPE!… They don’t eat their wheaties over there as wheaties have all kinda garbage in them, no way they would touch them…
