I like Kurtz’s mockup, I think it’s definitely headed the right way. But the problem I see with that is that there seems to be no way to distinguish track/column structure. It’s okay still if one has instruments with dedicated tracks, but what if you have many instruments on one track? You could assign several instruments to the same track, of course. But then, what if you want to use one instrument on many tracks?
This system takes away some of the tracker-type flexibility renoise has with instruments and tracks. But the general layout with the vertical pianoroll is good, I think. The instrument coloring seems pretty logical too, although it might cause a mess of logic when used with the track coloring system.
Adding to the brainstorm: What if the colors in Kurtz’s fine mockup were distributed according to which track the note is in (ie. the track colors), and like in keyzones, there would be a number denoting the instrument? This would seem more logical in my opinion. There would be no need for additional instrument coloring.
I think Ohmstudio has a security issue. I’m weary of it. People who have business and work related stuff coexisting on their music pc/mac, might wish to avoid Ohmstudio. I checked out the demo, and I’m already in the, “wish to avoid club.”
Btw, I’m not, “guessing.” I posed a question about this on the Ohmstudio chat, and I got a confirmation that, “there is a known security issue.” That’s just the way it is.
My next round of uninstalling… LMFAO, I have to do uninstalling in rounds, cause I download so many demos and freeware… LOL… Well, in my next round, Ohmstudio probably goes bye, bye…
The policy with these brainstorming ideas is more or less: “IF they come, they come when they’re ready”. Future features of renoise are practically never given away before the huge surprise-ninja-attack of a new beta release. The cycle has been around year. So in a few months it might be a good idea to start watching your six!
Hehe. It’s an expression… I’ve learned it from where most of my english skill comes from; american action movies. As I understood it, six refers to a position in the analogue watch, so it figuratively means “watch your back”…
Kurtz, I agree with your idea. I think it should be vertical, I don’t want to have to think in two different directions when switching between tracking and piano roll, and I love your mockup, looks perfect.
I made two pictures in photoshop of what i had in my mind. I kept it more simple. I don’t like the idea of the higher or lower the note, the more left/right/up/down the bar should be. So i still want to keep the “C-4 / C#4” tracker style notation, but with added bars, pure for setting the notation length and easier moving/copying notes. I think this would be great for making beats.
