Buying A New Mic

Ive convinced my mother to buy me a microphone for christmas/birthday combined present. i visited a sound centre today and got some prices on some dynamic microphones (to record vocals and instruments??). heres a list of mics, im wondering if anyone owns one, tried one, heard about one? thanks.

Beyerdynamic TGX58 $140US (contender for the Shure SM58)
Behringer MX8500 $56US (comes with hard case)
Behringer MX2000 $45US (comes with hard case)

im planning to plug the mic straight into the line in of the sound card? some people have reccomended a pre amp? im not sure if its neccessary…wat are the advantages?

Without a preamp it won’t matter if you have the best microphone in the world:
the recorded audio levels will be too low, and when you amplify it enough
all the background and quantization noise will be amplified as well…

Actually, to do good recordings a compressor or limiter is very useful/important as well, but for home recording on a low budget you can probably do without
it to start with. And no, a VST compressor won’t do any good there, because
the clipping will occur before the software gets the audio.

Any idea what preamp is in the same price-range as the Shure 58?..

I’m planning on buying one myself.

most mixers have built in mic preamps, so if you have a mixer, check that first ;)

I can see the need for pre amping now, but wats this talk about phantom-power? and can i use the preamp for recording from my turntable?

My friend recorded his lyrics without a preamp over my beat, can you
tell it hasnt been preamped?..download (770kb)
