Circle Synth

been trying this out, i like it :)

first sound i made was immediately to my liking

very nice GUI which is to me very important

How about Helix instead? It’s free.

Its a good addition to this thread no doubt, but only for the sound of it.
The sound is great, BUT I think that the synths mentioned here - namely MASSIVE and Circle, are discussed here together since they attempt (and succeed at times) to bring a better interface. An interface that does not make you want to kill yourself because there are too many damn knobs around here.

This helix synth, and many many others like it work under the false assumption that everybody likes to look under the hood. I dont. I want to work on an interface that is designed for a MUSICIAN and not for a sound engineer, or as some like calling themselves “synthesists”.

I have all the respect in the world for people who can spend half a day at getting “just the sound they imagined” because this or that “brilliant synth” gave them the flexibility to do so, but I for one think that making a sound should be a streamlined, structured process, and the VST developers should comply with gui standards that are acceptable in other software products.

Imagine all of your Firefox preferences standing in your face all the time, or imagine ALL the buttons in MS Word blocking your entire screen, leaving just a tiny place for writing. This is how I feel with most VST’s.

BTW - not sure if I mentioned it earlier in this thread, see GlassViper’s interface - a BIG place for you to shape your wave, instead of imagining how it will look like when you put 40% “Saw” and 60% “Sine-Square”

Thats good thinking, Thats progress.

Didnt mean to come off as grumpy, and of course no disrespect, just my (somewhat frustrated-) opinion.

I agree about the interface problems - I think an ADSR envelope should be used, rather than knobs. As a previous poster said, we are using a PC, so why limit it to copying a physical model with knobs, when we don’t need to?

:)

I believe you are referring to one of my earlier posts in this thread, but I could be mistaken.
I can be quite whiny (and obviously repetitive… ) when it comes to GUI. I hate bad GUI.

If you feel like me, I strongly suggest that you give GlassViper a shot.
It is not as fancy with all the modulation source-to-target flexibility and routing schemes, but the concept of their waveshaping, and a single area on the screen where everything is visualized is quite refreshing.

The nicest thing is that they show the wave as it plays, in an interesting way - unlike anything else I have seen.

I had a go with GlassViper last night Icarus, and I’m very impressed with it. I like being able to see the waveform too, a good design touch. I’ll play with it some more and see what I think, I may go for it, or stay with Helix.

:)

Glad you like it. I almost feel like their salesman…
By the way, they have the most unbelievable reverb plugin, RaySpace.
It makes all the other reverb plugins shrink in shame and hide in a dark corner… :)

But listen - I do not know why it should be this OR that.
I use some synths to generate nice pads, other synths to generate evolving sounds and other synths for bass or cutting leads.

Personally I also like some romplers with updated sounds, to quickly get some good sound going for inspirational purposes.

Until there is one “perfect synth” we should use more than one right?
