Just finished a song for a little side project.
I guess you could slap the overall “synth” etiquette on it. But maybe with an 80’s twist. At least I am trying to lean in that direction.
Thing is though, I´m really bad at mixing/mastering. No matter what I do the end result always becomes so much lower output-wise than others.

So, do you guys have any solid general tips for effect chaining and mastering? And how do I get that horrible (but loveable) 80´s sound.

I liked the mastering on this one:

I see what you mean about volume. Whacking it up about 9dB just about solved everything but I wanted to go just a little further.

So here’s what I’ve tried to give your track a bit more ‘oomph’ (alter to taste):

  • Grabbed your track via (a soundcloud downloader website)
  • Added an EQ boost at roughly 60Hz and 5700Hz
  • Added a 35Hz high pass in case there’s crap in the bass frequencies
  • and then added a 9dB maximizer

  • I might boost the snare a little at ~200Hz for added body, but that’s more of an aesthetic choice
