I think something similar have been discussed before on the forum, but then in the subjct of version control management. Wouldnt it be nice to go back to that original song that u created years ago, too see how it all started. That originial song has now been transformed during years to a new monster of its own, or maybe even many monster babies that doesnt looks anything like those old grandparents. I know I would find it interesting.
Does any of you use some time type of version control on your songs?
I mounted a pretty old harddrive a few days ago and found songs that were created probably with the some of the first versions of renoise. Hard to remember how long time ago that was. I’m pretty sure that I have some songs that I’m working on today that have their foundation in those old songs. They have probably changed name and form so I cant really say which songs are really really old.
Maybe we shouldnt expect a complete CM system inside Renoise, so my suggestion is bit smaller. My suggestion is that when a song is first saved, the creation date (time) is also saved inside the xrns. This date should not be changed later. This time stamp should even survive if I decide to save the file under a new filename. Can u follow this?
Compare this to the file properties dialog of Windows, where you can see Created and Modified (and Accessed). It is already there, but if u make a copy of the file it will get a new creation date.
When I’m on it, how about a field in the xrns file that tells how long time I have been working on the song.
Doesnt make composing easier, but help u see how important Renoise is for u.
