Right now, when browsing samples in the Disk Browser, clicking a sample plays it once at its original pitch. If I want to hear how it sounds at a different note, I have to drag it into an instrument slot first, then play it with the keyboard.
It would be really helpful to be able to press keys on the computer keyboard (or MIDI keyboard) to hear the currently selected sample in the Disk Browser at different pitches, without needing to load it into a slot first. This would make browsing and comparing samples a lot faster, especially when going through a big folder of one-shots or loops and trying to find the right one for a specific note/key.
Basically: same auto-preview behavior that’s already there, but responsive to key presses for pitch, instead of only playing at the original pitch.

PS: I have seen another post asking this kind of feature, but it’s been quite a while so I thought that it could be a good idea to create a new one:
the api functions do not allow for reading what the selected sample is on the disk browser, so there’s no scriptable hacky way we could do a facsimile of this. so only the devs can do this feature that has been in screamtracker3 since 1993 and in impulsetracker since, what, 1997?
I find you a bit harsh and passive aggressive regarding the dev team, citing other softwares and dates.
The Renoise team is limited and does a great job at listening feedback while maintaining what is the leading modern tracker on the market, there are other ways of asking them to add features.
Also, yeah, developing software is all about making choices and prioritizing tasks. Also, you may know the team experienced a pretty big sentimental loss recently and they might have other things on their head, and not expect to be flamed for no reason when reading their own forum
Knowing how much you participate to the community (and open source development), I can expect it wasn’t your initial goal though, just wanted to point it out.
