Field Recorders..

Hi, if you are interested in field recording I recommend you this interview:
http://www.freesound.org/articles.php?id=2

A member of the freesound project specialized in field recordings.

i got a Zoom H4, and the quality is absolutely great, plus its size is small enough to take it with you in your pocket.
they do have some downsides though:

  • button placement and buttons generally, they are just not easy to use
  • the windcap that came with it when i bought it is just like one of those clowns-noses but in black, does not fit tightly and thus i lost it on the first time i really took it anywhere. now, i have problems recording outside because of the goddamn wind. damn i hate wind (when recording)!

other than that, really good value.

heh, yeah it was the first one that turned up on ebay.

this one seems a bit more appropriate…

these stealth binaural mics looks pretty cool too…

Thanks a bunch! This has really influenced my decission and I think i’m going to be saving a bit for the H4 forsure! I was going to go with the H1 just to save money but really I doubt it will be worth it… I cant wait to really expand my music with feild recording.

_o0m!

got a sony pcm-m10 here and i love it to bits. i use it with some sound professionals in-ear binaural mics. records up to 24bit/96khz.

true story: i recorded my morning commute to work with the binaurals once – out the door, onto the tram, transfer to the subway, walk from the station to the office. when i listened back to it with earbuds (etymotic mc5), the recording of the subway was convincing enough to give me mild motion sickness. (i have the file for that if you want to have a listen.)

that’s pretty cool. also, i had no idea in-ear mics existed.

or Fostex FR2LE this one is good quality!!!

dont buy cheap portable recorders… coz u need to buy a new for a small time when you test it deeply…

YES PLEASE!!

subway starts around 12 minutes in, but it’s a good listen all the way through if you want to get a feel for the binaural mics (as well as the recorder). the awesome thing about the mics is that most people just think they’re earbuds (even though they clearly do not cover or go into the ear canal), so it’s easy to record discretely in public places (though of course you should be aware of the laws in your area regarding this).

Reply about checking laws, “Eavesdropping Laws Mean That Turning On an Audio Recorder Could Send You to Prison”, NY Times article.

that sony really lookes nice ( but no xlr inputs , at the moment I don’t have a field recorder but I do have a bad ass shotgun mic , ‘sennheiser k6/me66’ …so I am looking for a decent field recorder with xlr inputs .
If I had the cash I’d go for the industry standard ’ sound devices ’ what a beauty it is …but the price…

Are Nagra not still the Industry Standard?

I guess they both are , I mentioned nagra earlier in the thread

I have an H4n, but honestly, more than half of my field recordings get done with my iPhone 3GS running FiRE or Monle and a Vericorder MiniMic.

Because ultimately, the key to field recording is to A. be in the field, and B. have a recorder with you. The hard part is B.

I’m always carrying my phone, and the mic is small enough to pocket with it, but still of sufficient quality to make usable recordings.

Yes, the Zoom makes better ones, but it requires more planning ahead to bring it with me.

Ditto, I use my Droid with a recording app. Works very well.

If you are looking for the best headphones for field recording then in this article you will get a list of high quality headphones.

H4N has basically made my career. It’s big and bulky though - you really need to DECIDE to take it out rather than chuck it in a bag and see. I also have the Tascam D5 which has less features but sounds good and is far more take-around-able.

H4N can be used as a soundcard, mixer, multitracker and tuner. So it depends what you need !

I have a zoom h4 (the old out-of-production kind) and it is great.

I’ve also use a Hi-MD Minidisc recorder as an even more portable alternative, but it only has a minijack input. Paired with the right mic & chucked in a pocket you’re more likely to have it with you when needed.

BOOM!

I use FiRE TOO! Damn ass’s cut us off lolz think I might have to just bring the old one back from the grave.

LOVE that app, don’t know why they didn’t continue to support it, I trust it more than any of them on iOS
