I really like punk rock. I’m just curious, to see if this influence anybody else? I like Ramones, Social Distortion, The Germs, Rancid, Suicidal Tendencies, Agent Orange, Offspring, Green Day, Sex Pistols, The Adolescents, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, Black Flag… Etc, etc…
My tastes are in the sort of punk that ties in with the so called New Wave, and similar; so I’d substitute things like early U2, REM, and The Police, add The Living End…
I appreciate punk as a sort of work ethic, slightly as a political statement and less so as a type of music. That means it’s inspirational but I don’t sit around listening to it.
Anyways, I played in a (punk? post-punk?) band back in the day (late '70s), played at CBGB and TR3, loved punk rock and no wave at the time, but nowadays it all seems like vicarious rage.
I guess perhaps as a pop soundtrack for life some stuff is good, but I find glitchy electronic noise music more in the spirit of punk rock then anything passing itself off as punk rock theses days. Pretty much all rock music is playing it safe, almost by definition.
The best part of punk was that people didn’t let their inability to operate an instrument stop them from making music. Their relative ignorance and lack of skill took them to (sometimes) uncharted areas. Same can be applied to Renoise and countless other modern music tools.
QFT. Also certain branches of electronic music and free parties seem to have a bigger DIY ethic than most Punk these days too. Although that can still be found as well to some extent…
yup… love punk. Bad Religion, Dead Kennedys, Clash, Ramones, Rancid, Kjøtt (norwegian), but also do like some NOFX, Goldfinger and stuff like that. Good times.
you’re right, but in my opinion 80s hardcore punk is one of the forefathers of the free party/ free tekno movement which is one reason, why i (still) like it.
used to he slim and look awesome all dressed in black listening to postpunk stuff like joy division Bauhaus and the first Christian Death album. but now im overweight, listen to country and make music with minor 6and major 7th chords
I’ve listened to a lot of punk and new wave. Mostly classic 70-80s stuff. I tried to get into the 90s american wave, but it lacked something… too polished or something. But there’s a lot of later stuff that has that punk attitude I like. Here’s a playlist with a bunch of good stuff:
What happened to the forum limit of three videos per post?
Like some punk, admit I don’t know it well. Quite good friends with the Reknaw lot, who have been putting on punk gigs both legal and squats for nigh on twenty years. Inner Terrestrials and Headjam are probably the best known of the bands that play for them on a regular basis…
