I have an instrument that renoise thinks is an effect

MidiStrum is an instrument plugin, not an effect. However it only appears as an effect in renoise, not as an instrument.

It inputs midi and outputs midi. Is there any way I can get renoise to allow me to load it as an instrument rather than as an effect?

first, load it as an effect. then, select it in the vst fx alias submenu located at the top of the list where you would normally choose your instrument plugin from.
