A new deep techno excursion, feels slightly incomplete - i need to create some transitional fx and sprinkle in a few little bits here and there but structurally and musically im fairly happy with it.
For some reason the forum fucks up the embedding of these âon . soundcloud . com / âŚâ links.
I imagine it will get figured out at some point, but for now you can simply copy/paste the normal direct link to the SC track itself from your browser into your post here.
Ok, thanks for the clarification. I donât even know how to âon (dot) soundcloud (dot) comâ, I just copy the original link and thatâs it. Why should one do it differently? Anyway, now that the link was corrected and every song is listenable, I can say: Nice soundtrack, @savo_pl , itâs just a little boring sometimes because every single track sounds extremely similar and uses the same instruments, in some cases itâs in fact the very same song with some minimal differences. My favorite is âLevel 1 Bossâ, I think this track transports the most energy by far. Unfortunately the cool synth bass is very weak and soft through speakers and the drums very loud in comparison to the rest of the song, but through headphones I can hear what you were probably after and I like it. I also checked the game, which is garbage as expected. Your music upgrades the game for sure.
All right! This is your second finished track ever, right? And just like your first finished track youâve created a very cool atmosphere with this one again. The mix is also pretty good, no complaints. The beginning and the end is good composition-wise, but you could improve the middle of the song. From 2:40 to 4:48 the song is pretty empty without the pads. I would have expected some background synths, plucks or whatever. Just something that âreplacesâ the pads and fills the gaps. You could also use these synths at the last part of the song as an âextensionâ of the beginning. This way you would also create more differences between the beginning and the end. Nothing big, but it doesnât need to be big. Just some slight differences to keep it âinterestingâ. And btw. welcome to SC.
@TNT Your comments mirror my thoughts exactly, i added a drum layer for that section but i dont think it carries it. In my mind i saw a glassy FM lead for that part, which i might go back and add. My intention was to let the groove play out a bit, id been trying to exercise a bit of restraint in terms of not just adding and adding to it, trying to get the fundamentals right and let them speak for themselves but it is a little spartan.
I need to step away from it for a few days, let some ideas percolate.
Thatâs unfortunate. What was the problem? The first part of your song (0:00 - 2:24) is a complete mess mixing-wise. This part could have been a very nice Trap beat, but especially the low ends are disastrous. The kick is completely flat, dull and almost inaudible. Itâs like youâve wrapped it in a blanket, threw it in a soundproofed box and buried it 6 feet deep. It should be the opposite of its current state. The second part is much better mixing-wise (and you also used another kick), but composition-wise the first part dominates imo. And hey, congrats to your amount of plays. It seems that itâs your new standard having almost 200 plays just a couple of hours after the release on SC. Finally youâre getting more attention.
I was experimenting with a lot of send tracks and groups and tracks that affected other tracks and it all turned into a huge mess and i ended up using all my cpu so i had to bump the shit show down for a bad attempt at making it work somehow and then i told myself that this was never going to become a great track no matter what i did, so fuck it, iâll just post it as it is and make something better next time.
Ok, so you âovermixedâ stuff without knowing what exactly to do. If you want to learn how to mix you will have to focus on the fundamentals first, and thatâs mono mixing. Donât mess around with too many groups and sends, thatâs not relevant for the fundamentals. But if you want to also include parallel processing right away, try my template if you want (I kept it very simple, so donât be afraid): TNT Template.xrns (14.5 KB)
Check the master track! Turn on the stereo expander for mono mixing, turn it off to go back to stereo. There are also a few VSTs you might not own. If you donât own the âWeiss Maximizerâ just replace it with the native Renoise Maximizer (the default settings are perfect, and you can increase the volume and hence the LUFS by increasing âBoostâ). You could drop GClip, but if you would like to clip your song (I would recommend 100% soft ciipping at 95-97%) youâll need it. In any case I would recommend to download the following free VSTs which you can find in my master track:
GMonoBass is crucial for mixing. The settings: XOver 150-200 Hz, 0% WIdth
LoudMax is crucial for true peak. The settings: Thresh 0 dB, Output -1 dB, ISP detection ON
Youlean Loudness Meter 2 is a visual control for your LUFS and true peak. True peak should be -1 dB.
SPAN is a visual control for your frequency curve of the whole song. Just switch to mode âAverageâ.
Mid/side processing is also included in my template, but you can just ignore it if itâs too much. In this case just delete the FX tracks Md, Sd, L, M, H and the resepective sends in the instrument tracks (I divide everything in drums, bass and instruments) and mute the remaining send device that sends the signal to the instrument bus. Otherwise just put two send devices on the tracks you would also like to process mid/side (just like shown in the template, you can find these sends in the instrument tracks), one sends the signal to âMdâ (Mid) and the other to âSdâ (Side). The last send in the chain of an instrument track should always mute the source. Hope that helpsâŚ
Edit:
The second send device of track âClâ was muting the signal, instead it should keep it, so Iâve corrected and replaced the template. Itâs no big deal and you probably noticed it anyway, but I like things to be correct.
I felt this started well. Had my attention immediately. Renoise is great for guitar loops, in fact the ultimate guitar looper. Nice spikey riff diversions. But I thought the massive reverb coming in drowned out what was a good idea originally. I didnât feel the drum and bass much. To me you lost the essence of the track straight away. But the track had plenty of heart to start with.
Thatâs a neat little track. I like the glitching / stuttering. The sound design is excellent! Iâm on my 3rd listen cause there is definitely something there for me. Yet at the same time I canât seem to fully connect to the track. The shut up sample doesnât do anything good for me. I feel it breaks the abstract flow of the track when it comes back. And at the beginning itâs a bit of a shrug, for me anyway. But good stuff otherwise! Please continue to make more.
