Damn, I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed this. Embeds seem fine for now, but listening on-site is abysmal with new uploads.
My guess is that they’re pushing their pro mastering thing (whatever it’s called) so that we can all pay $$$ for them to make our mixes normal again. I hope I’m wrong about this but I’ve got a bad feeling
The sound quality gets slightly worse (harsher) in every aspect, especially in terms of high mids and highs, which could lead to artifacts (like the second open hat in this one at 0:59) when listening on SC.
The values like TP, LUFS, loudness range, dynamic range etc. will be changed.
SoundCloud will most likely cut the beginning of a file by about 1 second (or more). Sometimes they do it immediately, sometimes after a few days. So if your songs start for example with a kick, the transient will be cut and therefore the desired impact is gone. To avoid this you need to add at least 1-2 seconds of silence before uploading on SoundCloud.
Even if you’re providing a MP3 as a free download, the MP3 that you can download on SoundCloud isn’t the same MP3 that you’ve uploaded before.
No need to compress MP3 to MP3. I’ve never uploaded anything else than MP3. SoundCloud definitely changes the sound for whatever reason. It’s weird imho, because it affects primarily the higher frequencies.
It’s worse than I thought. I rendered my last track “The Vortex” at -1 dB TP and it hits +4.5 dB when uploaded to soundcloud. Always thought -1 dB TP is fine. As I don’t hear any artefacts I don’t care…
Have you also checked your song externally before uploading to SoundCloud? I did this a couple of times, and everytime there were different values compared to internal measurement. Not that bad like on SC, but quite different, especially in terms of TP. I also checked some of my favorites from my music collection (professional productions), and it’s the same game. In those cases TP is always between +1 and +5. On SC it gets worse. Imagine what happens if you don’t limit loudness and TP. Clipping all over the place. So it’s required to mix properly and master your sound appropriately, then you’ll get an acceptable result on SC.
Just paste the copied plain text in your comment and there you go: Photonic Jitter | Progressivist
So usually it works this way. But in this case it obviously doesn’t, probably because it’s the only track of the account. Anyway, it won’t look right in the preview, only after posting, so don’t be confused.
Same procedure for embedding SoundCloud
So you were using a piano thing while creating this track?
Personally I prefer the second half, not only because of the uneven Acid, but I dig the oldschool vibe. You could bring that stuff a little earlier imho. And I think you can push everything but the drums a little in terms of volume. Maybe also soften the bongo and conga sounds a little. Good one.
And “kent” is the best one. Nice instrumentation, nice interaction of sounds, nice mix and I also dig the beat.
Also my sad mixes seem to be just fine on both SoundCloud and YouTube. I don’t know or care what the TP is. I just brickwall limit to -0.5 dB in Audacity and upload as 48 kHz / 24-bit WAV. For YT I convert to 320 kbps AAC with ffmpeg using libfdk_aac. According to Amuse’s AI master tool my mixes are almost perfectly in the target area when it comes to LUFS and Peak dBFS.
