standard for which keys to assign to which type of drum?
usually c4 is a bassdrum of somekind and then you got a snare around c# etc.

You could perhaps base your mappings on the General MIDI percussion map?
ye, not a bad suggestion. as it stands now do i group the drums by type and four in each category.
four different bds, sns, hhs and cymbals is quite often enough for a particular tune.
I normally use one drum sample per instrument. This makes sens to me since I never reuse a drum kit, I just load individual samples and play around until I’m happy with the combination. It also makes it easy to clean your project for unused samples (renoise doesn’t support removing unused samples inside instruments).
