Just started using Renoise... I have 50 questions!

Ok, I took the quiz while eating some spaghetti. Hope it helps in some way.

Basic controls

  1. Not exactly possible I think. You can hit enter to play a single line though.

  2. that would be ctrl+scroll I think. (Keybound buttons should also show the current shortcut in the tooltup) Also notice the patternloop column in the Pattern Matrix on the left.

  3. no Idea, don’t really use a mouse. In the Preferences (ctrl + ,) -> shortcut settings there is an option to disable mousewheel acceleration at least. But patternnavigation with mouse is one of the weaker points of renoise. It tends to jump a lot if you use leftclick to navigate

  4. there is an Icon below the instrument list looking like this: >I<, turn it on to switch the current instrument to that of the respective column. You can always change the instrument number of a note by hand. And then there is a tool called “convert instruments in track” or something like that. you should install that, so you don’t have to do this.

  5. you can adjust the number of lines the cursor moves after entering a note with ctrl + number (or via the box below the patterneditor between the quantize and the vol button) Linking a midi event to the note off(A or capslock) or the down key - that I don’t know.

  6. You cannot really set a start and end point for a loop inside a pattern. You can set a fraction in the transport menu right to the metronome button, pressing numpad-enter will loop that fraction of a the current pattern’s length, depending on where your note cursor is at the moment. Iirc there is an addon that will let you defione more precise loops, but I don’t remember its name.

  7. No, I don’t think so. Again browse the tool section on renoise.com, there are plenty of little addons, that overcome some of renoise’s deficits and installing them is just downloading and dragdropping the file to your renoise window

Samples

  1. alt-click the filebrowser or any other window to focus it (also go into the prefs->keybindings and enter focus in the searchfield to assign shortcuts) Only then you have access to all of the shortkeys available for that segment (middleMB click should do it too)

  2. no thumbnails I think. Latency depends on samplesize

  3. Not in the way of tagging files unfortunately. That would be pretty cool. Only thing you can do is selecting folders and right clicking on the numbers buttons right next to it, to set one of 4 shortcuts for each of the 4 tabs (song, instr, sample, other)

Effects

  1. There is no simple shortcut. One solution would be to add a doofer device and drag all fx inside it, then just turn the doofer on/off. You can also stop a certain fx-device by using patterneffect 0x##, ## being the position of the device in the track’s chain.

  2. Most effects are pretty barebone in renoise, guess it’s by design. To create more complex stuff, you are encouraged to stack filters, reverbs, delays, eqs… together. Make use of doofers and track grouping/send-tracks to split up signals. There is a pretty cool youtube tutorial on reverb creation by user achenar. Youtooble it. Also install “group selected tracks” tool. It’s a must have.

  3. not easily possible. Maybe with a formula device, that would calculate the desired delaytime from bpm/lpb

  4. sorry, not an option. Either use a vst or buy yourself a magnifying glass - I’d really like that as a feature in the futere…

Automation

  1. A. combine them into a doofer (basically a container device with some neat sidefeatures) The downside is, that you cannot communicate with devices inside a doofer via patternFX. B. use the #hydra device to connect several device parameters to a single input. C. combine both

  2. Curve automation in renoise kind of sucks. I use LFOs or the formula device and sometimes patternFX for most tasks. There is also a kind of hacky way to use a silent sample that is played on it’s own track, triggering a signal follower device. Works pretty good but you have to add another track and it is not as precise as the default automation

Window layout

  1. It is crazy  no detachable pattern editor/mixer for now. only the sampler window is detachable. I’d love it if renoise would be like blender GUIwise. But it isn’t. get used to the F-keys

  2. not really.

  3. no. Blasphemy.

  4. you guessed right

  5. That can be annoying. titlebar is only visible in nonfullscreen mode

Themes and colours

22,23. look for the item you want to change by using both dropdown menus

  1. https://forum.renoise.com/t/alternate-main-in-theme-editor/18034

  2. there are some nice tools for that purpose, no way to do it out of the box i believe

  3. just save them to your user lib and switch, should be pretty simple to create an addon that switches them automatically based on time

27,28. you can set the font size of the pattern editor in the pref>gui settings. other than that, no.

Misc

  1. yes, set your vst folder in prefs>plug-misc. your vsts should appear in the fx list after a rescan. rightclick an instrument slot to add vstis

  2. no idea, there has to be some converter, the file dialog will tell you, what can be opened in renoise.

I know that’s a lot of answers. If you see anything you don’t get, then that would be very disappointing. cheers:)
