mac soundcard problem (ppc)

I have a G5 Mac with OS X 10.5.8 and use a Behringer FCA202 external firewire soundcard which works great with GarageBand and my other audio software. I am trying out Renoise v2.7.2 and there are strange noises during playback. It sounds like distortion and I cannot figure out what it is.

Have you tried toying with the latency settings in the audio preferences? What happens if you raise the latency a bit (if you have the option then!)

Thanks for your reply. I have tried raising (and lowering) the latency with no effect. I reinitialized the soundcard with no effect. I tried different sampling rates with no effect.

I have various audio software on my computer, but none of them has had any problems with the hardware. CoreAudio just always worked fine. I am close to dismiss Renoise.

I just gave Renoise another shot by changing the output to the internal (more common) sound card and the hiss is completely gone. But I don’t want to work with a lower quality internal sound card, I’d like to use the firewire external sound card which by the way works fantastic will all my other software.

Though 2.7.2 is the last PPC supporting version, i’m not sure if that also means these kind of issues should not be looked into, there might be more Renoise registered users that depend on PPC hardware.
I have the idea Renoise 2.7 is using old Kext files to communicate with audio cards, but Taktik can confirm this for sure.
I am going to move this to the help/support and bugs forum.

I think if Renoise 2.7.2 needs this minor update, the problem would perhaps be gone.

Also do know that most FireWire chipsets are not suitable for controling FireWire audio interfaces. The best chipset is Texas Instruments. But considering the fact that your audio interface works fine with other hosts we can pretty much exclude this cause.

What i can add is that OSX 10.5.8 users seem pretty much out of luck when they have issues with their firewire interface:

I would really recommend to put up some savings to upgrade to a newer Mac (which most likely does a better job in supporting firewire interfaces) and this also allows you to download the newer versions of Renoise.

Thanks for your proficient reply. I think the G5 Mac is pretty much the ideal machine for music, since it runs Logic 9 Studio, the bread & butter music app, smooth without any issues. No matter what I do never I get any latency problems with the FCA202 firewire audio setup. I use a lot of software synths, real time guitar effects (like AmpliTube or GuitarRig) etc. But anyway I never get into performance bottlenecks or alike. Besides that as I read on the links you provided there is a series of completely new bugs and troubles with the Intel Macs and the 10.6 and later OS X versions.

I will upgrade to the black vase (the new Mac Pro) once it grows out of the 1.0 stadium, but I will most probably use it primary for HD-video editing, not for music. Till then I’ll be very happy with the G5 Mac and Logic 9. For Renoise I can use the workaround with the internal audio output or I can use Renoise on a other Intel/Windows PC, where I didn’t experience any problems.

What i do know is that firewire soundcards do not pose specific Mac OSX problems, they exist on Linux and Windows world as well, mainly because of the majority of chipsets perform shit on firewire (it is not really a problem of the audio device itself). These days USB 3.0 is getting more lucrative above Firewire to get a good soundcard for (not only performance wise but you also have a futureproof device in case your PPC Mac 10.5 decides to completely die on you).
A pity that USB 3.0 wasn’t yet common good in the PPC days.

Well, that choice is totally up to you, i’m not capable to say if the devs would attempt to look into th PPC issue regarding the firewire soundcard issue. Since Renoise 2.7 is the last for PPC, it seems reasonable to me to patch it if the patch would resolve the issue.

It hasn’t been asked yet so my hunch is that you have another FW device plugged into one of the other FW ports of your G5.
Although there were two physical ports on the later G5 models they all share the same bus. Using two FW devices on the G5 is typically ok in most situations but if one of those devices is either a video or audio i/o interface you’ll run into trouble.

Even if you dont think any other FW device is plugged in you should check. Unplug any other FW device besides your interface. FW 800 OR 400. Unplug them all besides your interface and try again.

If that isn’t the culprit try a different FW cable. Then try a different FW port on the G5.
