[Ms] How To Use Ms Synctoy To Backup Directories Daily

Note*
Pay attention to which option you select.
“Synchronize”: Updates files both ways…keeping changes like renames, deletions and edits to either folder contents the same between the two.
“Echo”: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right.
“Contribute”: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are repeated on the right. No deletions.

notes*

Since SyncToy 2.1
make certain to use “C:\Program Files\SyncToy 2.1SyncToyCmd.exe” -R (in the scheduler)
or it will through an error.

Older versions of this instruction will say to use “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\SyncToy\SyncToy.exe” -R
This is for older versions of synctoy*

The newest version of synctoy

eh. this was supposed to be in Tips and Tricks…

Nice one. Have asked about back-ups and syncronising a few times in different places but never quite come across a free Windows one with the three basic options this seems to give. Echo being the one I’d most likely use most often.

Checked and works on XP, Vista and Win7, with both x86 and x64 versions according to the article.
