I wanted to share this with you, even if not the final mix, and extra details and polish is needed, esp. in the drum “programming”.
Edit: I have just completed a new mix, download it here
As the title says, this is the first song that I’ve done completely in Renoise. I’ve made plenty of modules, but this is a more traditional songwriting effort (a collaboration with a singer and a guitarist). Working with acoustic sound is a completely different challenge, and very rewarding.
The track was recorded, edited, and mixed without ever leaving Renoise. For me, that stands as a testament to the quality and flexibility of the software.
Apart from being a little trad in the ballad approach, this is good stuff! Great example of a lot of electro-acoustic post-new-folk audios. I could play this over and over and not get tired of it much.
Compression is a little too harsh on some elements, you might want to try lowering the ratio and threshold.
Edit: the noise stuff in this is beautiful! Extra points!
Thanks all, it’s good to hear your opinion
And yes, the noise part has to do with the lyrics
And Foo, who always provide mixing tips. I like that! I think that what you refer to as too much compression is in fact background “smearing” effect caused by a spectral effect called shapee. I’ve used it for bit of vocoding, which adds nice harmonics to the whole track. I think there is a couple of critical points in the track, where the effect is too obvious and sound like a “pumping” compressor
