I like the reverberated crackling sounds. They remind me of Metroid Prime.
Really cool and different (I had to save my ears by lowering the treble though).
Had my speakers on very high volume when it started. (Because it stars very quietly) And if it went loud gave really cool effect. Like some drug hit or something.
Great dark ambient work.
Some solid creativity going on here. Some moments remind me of Storm of Drones and Fovea Hex’s darker moments.
Had I heard this 5-6 years ago it would have flattened me completely, but unfortunately Drone has become so prevalent in avant garde circles that it’s reached saturation point - much the same way glitch has become as a hackneyed motif. This is still fine as it’s still fascinating listening over most traditional forms of music, but I’m tending to look else where for new sonic adventures (just what that is I’m not sure of yet).
I say all this with a touch of hypocrisy as I’m a bit of a droner myself. After doing the ‘standard practice’ of the minimalist pad thing I started to added to the template a bit (push minimal to maximal if you like). I ended up trying to marry drone with bits from prog, avant pop, deep house and breakcore/noise. A lot of it still comes off as derivative new ageism and could be criticised an over-reliance on the “pad” as a musical technique. Depends on who is listening I guess, and a lot of this avant stuff is make for the sake of making it, not for mass appeal. The musical world does need it’s experimental frontier zones pushed, so that the work filters back into the whole in a positive way.
This track could indeed be taken to the next level with some hauntological voice/singing. But there are a million different choices in that direction too…
Welcome to the life of a composer with Internet access. You should just do what I do and never listen to music anymore.*
*Note: Impeding the symptoms does not actually solve anything ._.
Nowai, I listen to a LOT and very widely too. But I tend not to trawl the net for stuff - instead I search threads in culture. These are either lineage of artist, or lineage of ‘ideas’. And these searches are based upon what a like in music, not what is academically ‘right’ or ‘the latest hype’. Of course, you end up finding out about those things anyway.
Ok, so we’re composers: what are we gonna do with it? For some it’s OK to noddle about and publish the results to the world - this is fine. But for others I like to hope they take up the challenge of achieving the perfect paradox of unifying the appeal of pop and the excitement of sonic innovation whilst all the while remaining socially relevant. I think you’ll find the most enduring revered musical ideas fit this aim. So again I ask the question: who are you writing for? The answer provides the certainty and comfort that the composer needs to get on with work.
