in my current project i’m using vocals ripped of a VHS cassette. it’s quite noisy, so i’m looking for a useful noise reduction tool to use in renoise. of course, it can be a stand-alone app, but it’d be great if it was a VST.
any good suggestions?

it’s just a guess but you’re probably better off not doing that in realtime. cooledit, adobe audition and soundforge are a few examples of software that does noise/click/pop reduction, i’m sure there’s free alternatives but i dont know of any.
Cooledit/Audition has a hiss-reducer for the typical tape-noise aswell as a general “noise-reducer”, both working with noiseprints and doing an quite excellent job. You won’t get fully clean and sparkly audio out of it, it’s technically not possible, but they are the best I know of.
Renoise’s internal Gate can do basic noise reduction. It will just cut volume beloe a certain threshold. Unfortunately, proper noise reduction like the reduction in Audition can introduce tin-can-like artifacts into the sound. The best thing to use IMO is a multiband expander or gate.
… I like Izotope Ozone’s multiband expander ![]()
I know real time noise reduction won’t be as good as using an app for it… but still, for those lazy, on the fly moments (or maybe just to have another effect to play around with) a noise reduction VST would still be interesting to me, so if anyone knows any, link away!
I’m using Acoustica Premum as my audio editor and it came bundled with their Studio Clean Suite. Haven’t needed these so far though, so i can’t comment on the quality.
There is a chance for realtime usage.
Many years ago I saw here on the forum that there are wrappers which let you treat DirectX plugIns just like VST plugIns. The NoiseReduction in SoundForge is a DirectX DSP. So having the SoundForge’s NR PlugIn installed you can use it through a Wrapper as a VST in Renoise.
But I don’t know if this kind of realtime is really realtime then ![]()
My two cents.
You might have some luck with this plugin:
It’s not specifically geared towards noise reduction, but you can do a lot of different types of spectral filtering with it + it’s free.
Izotope’s RX is very good, although it’s standalone.
Thanks!! This looks fun to say the least ![]()
