Hi, only been tracking a couple of month so am abit wobbly. My question is how can I add a swing quantise of 57% like the same as a roland 808 909 step sequencer, for the authentic techno drum sound, without affecting the whole track by using the groove settings in the song settings section in renoise. I have tried importing a midi file but could not get it to work. Any help would be great, thanks.
Welcome.
You can use the note delay command. It’s Dx in the volume column or 0Dxx in the effects column. Put this command on the offbeat rows (i.e. 01, 03, 05, 07, etc. odd rows). A delay of 1 or 2 ticks, that is D1 or 0D01 in the respective column, will do the trick.
Using the volum column you can delay inidvidual notes. Using the FX column approach will delay all notes on the row in that track.
Here’s a very simple example:
000 | C-400.. C-401.. --- .. ---- |
001 | --- .. C-401.. --- .. 0D02 |
002 | --- .. C-401.. C-403.. ---- |
003 | --- .. C-401.. --- .. 0D02 |
004 | C-400.. C-401.. C-303.. ---- |
005 | --- .. C-401.. --- .. 0D02 |
006 | --- .. C-401.. --- .. ---- |
007 | --- .. C-401.. --- .. 0D02 |
008 | C-400.. C-401.. --- .. ---- |
009 | --- .. C-401.. --- .. 0D02 |
010 | --- .. C-401.. --- .. ---- |
011 | --- .. C-401.. --- .. 0D02 |
012 | C-400.. C-401.. C-303.. ---- |
013 | --- .. C-401.. --- .. 0D02 |
014 | --- .. C-401.. --- .. ---- |
015 | --- .. C-401.. C-403.. 0D02 |
Hi, thanks for the reply, I’ve tried the note delay method and it seems to work fine. Techno, here I come!
My swing method is to set the tempo every row; alternating every other row.
lets say the base tempo is 120 and I want to add swing; I go down by X, then up by 2X. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that creates the correct ratio to find the point to, using the right degree, correctly emulate what would otherwise be triplets; though it would be "missing the 2nd note
does that make sense?
The actual purpose is to still keep the base tempo at 120
ex:
110
140
110
140
110
140
ex:
100
160
100
160
100
160
can someone verify if I’m correct? I’ve been doing this for years
115prgp is an example iirc:

protman i love your stuff dude.
Hey, Protman. You are indeed correct. I’ve been doing this myself for years as well, though not using the tempo but the speed setting:
I.e. for speed 6 I’d go about like this:
F107
F105
F107
F105
or even
F108
F104
F109
F103
F106
F102
F10A
F106
And it still paces at the same general tempo.
Dirty Protest wanted to swing only the beats though, not the entire track, so that’s why a recommended the delay fx. And both your method and mine from this post would swing everything. Which is better, imho, but anyway.
P.S. Great tracks on your Muxtape, Protman. I really liked 149idn_19991015 and 130jaak.
Is it normal that d3 ( so a step delay ) is the maximum …whenever I type in a higher value note delay doesn’t work
OK I …was a litlle bit too fast …the maximum value is determined by the global speed setting
