The method is correct, the analogue way to do this was to flip the tape reels over and record the reverb. Flipping them back would cause the reverb tail to match by simple physics of the process. In the Renoise world getting the timing is a matter of perfectly matching the length of the reversed sample to a number of lines in the tracker. Delay and plugin capture have tools to assist with this.
