Here’s what I came up with :
I’m baffled that no one’s ever come up with this.
There’s mucho dinero to be made here!!

Which is probably because no one really loves music-critics.
I don’t trust them, there are alot of (even indie/underground) bands that are “critically acclaimed” that I don’t get the hype they get and vice versa, there are bands/records that got bashed and that I personally love.
Someone once said “if you want to do artistical work and realize that you are not good enough just become a critic and nag about everyone else doing it.”
Apart from that I see abit of a problem if someone pays you 25 bucks to get a “your music sucks completely” review back.
best of luck with your idea, though. (I really mean that.)
Well I mean a professional review with constructive criticism with remarks on all the points I mentioned in my first post.
And then when other music review sites start popping up, you could send your track to different ones to see whether they give you more or less the same criticism.
To be honest, comments given to tracks on music forums don’t really cut it for me, mostly I don’t get any comments at all. But then I sent some bits (well more than 50 ) to a music label and they were interested in some of them.
If only I knew what were my good/bad points in music production, how else will one become better??
nice idea, but where will you find a review team up for that task?
they have to be a band who’s names and deeds are being
retold throughout the centuries, with authority, if people want
to take them seriously.
besides, with all those hundreds of different genres and approaches
to music, (electronic, instrumental) that team needs a lot of experience
with all the different aspects of producing, including recording, post-
production, music theory… such reviewers probably come with a price …
I understand your point that comments given on music fora and such
might not be making the cut for you, but at least you can be assured that
people who DO comment, are enthousiastic, passionate and producing
music themselves.
Record labels themselves could do this, I’m sure they’re qualified and have the technical know-how.
And regarding comments from people on forums : I’ve NEVER heard anything positive about my music.
But when I listen to the tracks people do like on those forums, I understand why I don’t get any (positive) response …
hmm good idea indeed…
your last reply made me want to hear ur stuff…
how could I hear it?
Yeah, I wanna give it a listen too, what style are you doing?
Did the ones that slaughtered your music give you constructive critisicm or just “this sucks”?
We’re quite about constructiveness here, especially when you spark our interest with threads like this.
hey, I make trance and even I get positive responses
So, POST a LINK
But… if people know that some labeldude is reviewing their music, my guess is they
spend their money on postal services and just send a demo right away. And also, with
the kazillion of different labels out there, I don’t really think it’s a credible gang up for reviewing.
Shit, even I run a label but I sure as hell could never do something like a ‘professional’ review…
Aww… Yes you can!
Hey, I was making a point!
When you send a demo to a label and the music is great but unfit for their label, you won’t hear anything from them. Unless it’s perfect for them, you get no feedback whatsoever. That’s a big problem with people who aren’t sure if their music has potential or needs a lot of work.
Bigger labels have people onboard who scan the net all day for suitable music, so they’re pretty fit for the job imo.
Well maybe nowadays they only listen to the 10s/100s of demo’s they get everyday and don’t have to look themselves anymore.
I have an ArtistServer account with 3 songs but here are the ones I’m working on at the moment. They’re all unfinished, I just arranged them a bit to make the previews a bit less boring.
The genres are techno, electronica and maybe one bigbeat-ish one.

Sry…
Just messing with ya.
But to a few light comments, in the sequence you posted it;
“Dark Jungle”
Like the beat, fx and mood, the buildup and breakdown is good too. Not sure about the melodic sides of the acid-part in there, though. Sounds out of tune, think I’d change that if I were you. But I’m not you, so do as you please. I’d love to hear this one finished anyway.
“Drowning”
Good start, always loved this kind of pumping progressive techno, I feel the ride could have a slightly different EQ, the part where it enters feels lacking something. Enter melody, I like it! Especially when you drop the ride. Yeah, drop the ride. The beat kicks in again, and I’d keep listening and bob my head to this if it was finished. Good one!
“MoreJungless”
The intro would be even more effective if it had some voiceover, it misses an element me thinks. Still like it for the potential buildup, also good beat here. Breakbeat or self-programmed? Whups, more rideness that I don’t really care for, maybe it’s too bright for my taste? Not too big a fan of that juno synth pad thing you have there either, sounds too generic.
“Hopping”, “Yeahyeah” and “HolyGhostsss” will be commented as soon as I can listen to the within the day, my co-worker isn’t too pleased with me playing music in the office when she’s here, hehe…
In short so far, you have good ideas, still want to hear something completely new and surprising from you, but look forward to hear your last 3. I’d recommend getting into some heavy sampling to bring out your own personality in your music; I mean, “Dark & Gritty” strikes me as a theme, which is cool enough, I just want that little spark that says “mine”. Which I’m positive you’ll find.
“Music is pretty decent” still is a biased opinion by just a group of people.
Most folks in the real world listen to things that move them and don’t judge the music on several technical aspects.
Music is all about personal taste, this is the wrong way around to go. Songs should get their credits because a listener is truly moved by the music rather than that the person has to rely on a judgement done by others.
If songs are popular by the amount of downloads, this should be the only statics shown, let the audienec decide wether they want to check it out or not.
The real review idea itself for the artist (value of technique etc.) is not anything new, there are several sites where you can upload your song to get it judged.
Frankly i would personally not consider investing money to have my songs reviewed and since lots of sites don’t charge anything for having songs reviewed either, i think you have your reason why this system currently does not exists.
Hey thanks for posting some comments! It’s kinda strange hearing detailed feedback on something you’ve made.
I think I oughta clean up the bass sounds, since it sounds a bit thrown together and chaotic.
You mean changing the little “fx”-bass sound at the start? I like it, it sounds a bit dark and menacing imo.
With ride, do you mean the lofi perc sounds? It’s a bit too loud or obviously present, it should be more subtle.
The intro should have more going on, I just semi-quickly slapped it together to have some minimal arrangement.
Yeah the break was self-made. I usually use random perc sounds, add some fx and play around with everything until someting useful pops up. I like the pad part, but I have to change its filter settings a bit. Its presence makes it a bit dark and menacing (again) imo.
What do you mean with rideness? Do you mean the single lofi bass sound?
Or the hihats with lfo’d eq settings? They sound too harsh, I gotta lower their eq.
I don’t really have a theme in my music, it’s kind of a moment-thing. I’ve got happier, more melodic stuff too, but I don’t think I’ll publish that. I got more than 150 bits that I find I should work on, so I got enough to do.
I also have 3 finished track on ArtistServer :

And a fourth one here, maybe my best of them all. It’s kind of a Terminator-ish soundtrack.

Anyway thanks again for listening and commenting.

Yoink, here’s another short piece :

Bubbly and organic I’d like to call it, I’ve never really done something like this.
Me like!
Do you have any links I can check out?
I used to know a site (something to do with yak-ratings or something), but I lost it somehow.
