Record in Reaper, Play VSTs in Renoise

Its been a few years since I’ve tried this so I’d appreciate any help please. I used to compose tracks in Renoise with VST instruments and then record audio (vocals or guitar) with Reaper. I can’t remember how to set this up.

It was a really powerful setup - I had it working with Cubase SX 3 as well - I could loop a sequence in Renoise and do multiple recording takes with Cubase/Reaper.

From memory, I used to start Reaper first, then when I’d start Renoise it would ask me if I wanted to use Rewire. That doesn’t happen anymore.

I’m using Reaper 5.80/x64 and Renoise 3.1.0 x64 on Windows 7 x64.

Can somebody please help me get this working again?

Update: I always start figuring things out as soon as I ask somebody else for help.

This is a good start, here’s what I did:

  1. Start Reaper - Renoise is not running

  2. “Insert new track”

  3. Click on FX button on track

This will display the FX window…

  1. Select ReWire: Renoise. This will automatically start Renoise.

  2. Load whatever project you have with your VSTs and you should be able to record audio at the same time your VSTs play.
