Regulating Your Volume And Hearing Loss

I haven’t been very successful intuitively regulating volume when mixing, and I’m pretty sure I have some noticable permanent hearing damage as a result.

I am determined to stop this, but I need hard numbers.
As my soundcards volume control only displays -inf to 0db, I can’t be sure exactly what decibel level I am pummeling my ears with. I am not well versed in technical audio terminology, but I am assuming that is a relative measure.

What I need is to know quantatively what the absolute db level going to my ears is so that I can be sure not to exceed healthy levels.
Is there any way to do this?

VERY interesting question. i always wished to know the decibels i am pushing through my ears, but i guess it’s a “no go” without any extra hardware equipment…
