► Renoise 3 Beta testing starts - announcing Redux

And honestly, it isn’t just the Renoise community that is showing dispeleasure with the newest release. You should see the endless amount of bitching going on at the Maschine forums over Maschine 2.0. My god. Never ends. And Maschine 2.0 is freaking awesome!!

Sound familiar?

There are a bunch of DAWs out there that do everything we desire. They have piano roll, and audio editing, guaranteed next level beatz… And yet we keep crawling back to Renoise, hating the others because they are boring and bloated and hyped. Like many people, I often ‘create’ in Renoise, and do final editing and mastering somewhere else - somewhere capable but boring. We don’t need another DAW, we need Renoise to stay as Renoise. So for me, any improvements need to be deeper, rather than wider. So… I like R3.

The big, big news of this release is the Redux roadmap. That is immense. It means working and developing in Renoise until we want to go to a DAW, then being able to take all the instruments with us. I think that meets most people’s desires and doesn’t compromise the core idea.

Phrases are cool, the instrument improvements are vital, but Redux is the big story.

Poor comparison
Renoise 3 removed nothing from previous version
Maschine 2 does
Find a bug in Renoise 3 and the devs will sort it out (pretty much for the next release normally)
Maschine 2 lets not even go there (NI support is a joke)

There is a hell of a lot to moan about with Maschine v2 (Some of the bugs actually prevent you from using big portions of it’s design)

PS Dont get me wrong i seriously love Maschine, a lot more than i ever did Renoise, but there is a lot more to moan about haha

Kudos to the devs for the massive amount that went into this release. But… It’s just not for me.

I hardly use samples, so I couldn’t care less about the new features. I mainly use VSTs and I’m probably weird in that I don’t compose DnB, techno or other EDM music. In stead my tracks tend to be quite big (50+ instruments and 50+ different tracks), and for that type of music Renoise simply doesn’t work as good as I’d want. Why? Because I don’t get a good overview of my track, continuously scrolling horizontally through all these tracks is a pain, arranging through the pattern matrix is cumbersome and automation across a few patterns also doesn’t work nicely.

Mind you, these are all limitation due to Renoise’s tracker origin (which tend to focus on (note) details), but a better way to view and work across patterns and see an entire song is what I sorely miss. I kinda hoped these would be tackled in 3.0, but alas.

Also a piano roll would have been very nice to work more intuitively with triplets, legato and key switches ;)

So… Respect for the devs for releasing but my idea to looks elsewhere for the stuff I need hasn’t been changed by the 3.0 beta.

I’m just glad I don’t have to look in that horrible speculation thread anymore. for this I am truly thankful.

I think one of the reasons for the heavily polarized reception of the new release is the
long time it was in development before reaching beta. Probably everyone subconsciously
imagined that “if they take THIS long, then feature X will be in the next release”.

It’s great that the tracker concept was developed for more depth of the tracker concept.
That is after all one of the factors that makes Renoise different from many other popular DAWs.

LOVING NEW RENOISE !!!

A huge thanks Renoise developers.

146MB .is it a joke?

It’s just the usual Internet Entitlement. You see it with every commercial software product that has a discussion forum. People seem to think that buying a piece of software grants them the right to dictate all future development priorities of that software, and the developers’ failure to cater to their every whim and demand is some kind of personal betrayal.

Actually people who buy software do dictate all future development if the developers want upgrade fees, so i suspect that is not the case, I think it is much more likely that some people have moved on from ‘Trackers’ as a whole, and while the new features are very advanced they are not going to cater for people who are wanting a more linear workflow.

Look into the phrases that can have a different LPB than the song itself. is that zoomable pattern editor enough for you? LPB 1 ambient, with LPB 32 phrases. or vice versa.

I am sincerely happy about this change of approach by you, and I hope you will find something useful to play with in Renoise 3: I appreciate what you are able to do with our little bricks and looking forward to hear the unexpected and of course also to hear your detailed feedback about what can be improved and how among the new features

I’m not going to abandon renoise. I probably never will.
It’s just that the new version adds more cons than pro’s FOR ME, so there is absolutely no reason for me to upgrade. In my opinion, the Renoise 2.8 was really almost the perfect DAW. Only missing some minor additions, which could have been added. So I will just keep an eye on this forum and the next 3.x subversions, and if I think there’s reason for me to upgrade, I will.
Ofcourse a big pro and +1 and tons of hearts to the renoise team for keeping this project alive and heading towards something we all want.
Oh and thanks to the guys that answered my DAW question. I will take a look at reaper.

I was frankly thinking the same many times i noticed this and similar replies, but kept my mouth shut wisely. There are also some things people perhaps want to do on sub-line level that you can’t do in the phrase editor. (note ghosting, switching instruments)

How can there be more cons in the new version? It didn’t loose any features from 2.8.

And why do everyone keep saying Renoise is no DAW? It’s digital, it’s a workstation and i don’t know about you, but i certainly use it for audio production.

Why would you think that? Did you find it funny?

partially quoting Cosmiq:

Let’s assume Cosmiq (or me) is your grandpa.
Your grandpa has a nice old vintage phone which he is basically fine with. It can do everything he wants to do with it, he only wishes it would be a little louder to improve the perceivability of his conversational partners.

Now you go to your grandpa in order to take away his old phone and substitute it with a recent smartphone saying it has all the new bells & whistles which makes it a worthwhile upgrade to the old vintage phone… unfortunately, the output volume of the new phone is identical to the old one.

I think we both agree that your grand daddy will rather opt for keeping the old phone instead of making the change which features no gain but a lot of confusion for stuff he has no use for.

So adding features is not the problem. But adding features that you don’t need that force you to change and revise your workflow without adding any gain at all will result in dissatisfaction.

Is there support for LV2 plugins on Linux finally? Or can I save my money and move on to a program that doesn’t exclude basically every native Linux audio plugin that has been made in the last 5 years?

Are the two mutually exclusive? A professional uses the right tool for the job. Renoise is niche and has a niche price tag.

I’m pleased that the devs got 3.0 out the door (well, beta) before Christmas. Congrats!

I bought Renoise 2.8 for the features it had at time of purchase. Anyone who did otherwise is foolish. The free version upgrade was a nice bonus. I’d be less inclined to purchase if that wasn’t part of the deal, but it’s still no guarantee of any specific future features, no matter how badly I or anyone else wants them. I’m satisfied that my purchase is supporting the developers so that they can continue improving this product.

I see your point keith303, i’m getting older too and it’s not getting easier to keep up with all the changes, but anyhow i bet you i have forgotten about 2.8 pretty soon.
The only real con with 3.0 is being lazy/impatient. :D

I haven’t gotten myself a smartphone yet though. I use phone for texting, calling and as a watch just like grandpa, why would i need a big thing that needs to be charged all the time, easily breaks, takes too much space in my pocket and costs a leg and an arm? I have a Playstation Vita for that. ;)
