Renoise, M-audio 2496 + Edirol Pcr 50 Combo

I´m planning to (finally) buy some new equipment. I´ve thrown my eye on a M-Audio Delta 2496 plus an Edirol PCR 50 controller (for controlling the synths) at the moment.
Well I just want to inform myself how they´re working with renoise. :)

Anyone already gathered some experiences? Do they make probs with Renoise?

I’ve been happy with the Audiophile 2496 under win2k; I get very low latency with Renoise. Every once in a while (it’s pretty rare, typically on song load) Renoise will crash and then the M-Audio drivers will somehow fail to unload properly, and trying to restart Renoise results in a bluescreen lockup. I’ve never lost anything except for a few minutes of restart time because of that.

Can’t say anything about other OS’s.

Both will work exelent with Renoise ;) I havn’t tried exactly that MIDI keyboard, but midi-keyboard as midi-keyboard, they will all work ;)
I have used M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496 under XP for years now without any problems. It is a great card with an extraordinary low latency, I doubt you can get a better card for that price…

@mute: wich version of the drivers do you use?

I use the PCR-50 with Renoise, works like a charm!

:)

Definitaly worth the money.

for $199 you can get an E-MU 1212m … also a great audio-interface … www.emu.com

works very well - and great sound quality

could be also an option. thx I´ll check this one.
So far I think, according to the positive resonance , I´ll go for a midiman/edirol combo :)

I followed twileks advice to buy the M-Audio 2496 and I was not disappointed. Just trust this man! ;) It is a really great sounding, stable card. Had no problems with it (using Windows XP).

Another question (not really Renoise related):

I consider to keep my cute SB in the case. (for FTII)
Does someone has gathered some experience with cascading the audiophile with another soundcards maybe?

Conflicts encountered? Apocalypse?

To run two PCI soundcard on the same machine is always equals to promblems ;) I do not suggest to do so. Btw, don’t you think it can be possible to run ft2 with the audiophile? audiophile has drivers for win95/98/me… I have no idea…

must not be a problem > 2 soundcards … i worked a long time with terratec and SB in the same maschine. choose pci-slots with differnt free irq’s - and everything should be ok …

That multiple soundcards in the same machine means disaster is an old myth,
perhaps true once (in win95 and before) but not generally a problem anymore.

The ASIO drivers of the MAudio Delta series seems to support having multiple
cards from that series in the same machine through the same driver interface.
I haven’t tried it or anything, but it’s visible right there in the ASIO setup panel.
My guess is that this should be accessable in Renoise as multiple outputs
through a single ASIO driver. But no promises, as I don’t know any details…

Having multiple soundcards from different manufacturers, that might be
another story. I don’t know. At least you will not be able to use both in
Renoise.

For the original question: I have the Audiophile 2496, working fine.
And the edirol is a midi controller, right? So basically, it sends MIDI,
Renoise receives MIDI, everyone is happy. Shouldn’t be a problem.

Note that this doesn’t mean that all programs will handle multiple
soundcards properly. For example, I had to set my SB Live as the windows
default soundcard for it to work properly with my TV card software.

But Renoise, and I’d believe most other audio apps, can access the 2496
without problems even if it isn’t the default. (And overall it’s better to
let the Live be default, so other programs don’t mess with the 2496 settings).

Yeah, by the looks of it this is nice interface, and very cheap as well. I couldn’t find anything really wrong with the specs anyway, though I already bought my interface before this one came out, otherwise I would have definitely considered it.

Atlantis thanks for the advice on the Firewire card.

Now as far as MIDI…ect and the Edirol PCR-50

  1. Can the “8 assignable rotary knobs (cut off, resonance, pan, tempo, etc.)” which are located on the Edirol PCR-50 control anything within Renoise???
What about the “8 assignable faders (volume, EFX send, etc.)”

  2. I have a yamaha synth, and it has XG support. Does Renoise have anything to do with this XG midi support? (what does XG add to general midi??)

As long as they send standard MIDI messages, and not some other proprietary
format, Renoise will recognize them and you can map them to whatever DSP
device sliders you want. It’s really easy, and will even be a little bit easier in 1.5.
Look up on “remote mapper”.

GM (general midi) is a standardized soundset and fx of synths and created by ROLAND. YAMAHA created XG which is more powerful: more fx and possibilities for soundmanipulation (e.g. envelopes for the sounds in the soundset)

in general both standards are controlable by midi-commands, midi-controlers and sysex-messages. XG is a little bit different from GM but basic things are the same … and with a sequencer that features XG you can control all the advanced features of your XG-synth via the sequencer.

Renoise supports free definable midi-controlers and if you know which controller supports the special xg-features you can control your synth by Renoise.
a little bit annoying is that a SYSEX feature is missing in Renoise: if you want to save all XG settings or control really special things in your XG-synth you need an external software or another sequencer.

That´s the problem. I didn´t found any information about the downcompatibility of the audiophile. Even if there are drivers for older OS´s available that doesn´t mean you get automaticlly SB16 or Gus support.

Ah well, I ordered it anyway :)
I won´t die if those two doesn´t work together the way I want :)
