Renoise On Mac Mini 1.4ghz Question

Hi fellas,

Does anyone run Renoise on a Mac Mini?. I’m interesting in buying a music-only computer, this seems a good choice as I don’t have to spend money on special cases and noiseless coolers as I do on the PC. I currently have an Athlon 2500+ and I never go beyond 50% of CPU consumption. I wonder if a PowerPC 1.4Ghz gives me as much power as an Athlon 2500+. Can you run 10 instances of Triangle II on a Mac Mini for example?.

Thanks in advance for your help

most likely not. AFAIK triangle II is only available for windows. :) :P
joking. :) i don’t know if a 1.4 GHz mac has more power than your pc.

but i have a little tip:
i removed the left coverpanel from my pc case, built a custom made one and replaced it. now the left side of my case is only a grid. the case temperature never goes up 30 degrees. cpu stays at 42 degrees (celsius).
if you want i can make some pictures and post here. (because i think i can’t explain it that well, and a picture says more…) :)

your athlon is faster!!!

if you want a fast Mac you need a G5 dual-cpu!

the G4 cpu is more than 5 years old! nevertheless a nice cpu …

Sorry,

I really asked a silly question, what I really wanted to know if that the G4 1.4Mhz is at least HALF the speed of my Athlon, given that I hardly go beyond 50% of CPU use

OOpss!! Thanks for the link. The G4 1.4Mhz looks really slow compared to the Athlon, I guess that it’s a bit risky. Maybe it is better to wait until they replace the mac mini’s processor with at least a 1.8 G5, in order to be 2 years behind the PeeCee instead of 4 as you said!

but on the other hand such comparison chart says nothing about the speed of the different applications … imho Photoshop is faster on Mac mini as on your athlon ;) … but Photoshop isn’t comparable to Renoise B)

Tiger is more a less an upgrade for developers. They introduced an API for them and Photoshop is actually one of the first applications that uses this. That would explain why it runs faster on the mac mini. I read that somewhere I’ll try to find a link to it.

the difference between your Athlon and a G4 1,5 is not only the reason why Renoise would be slow on a mac mini (or any mac). I use Renoise on my iBook G4 1,2ghz and it’s damn slow. The MACOS X version of Renoise is just not as good as the Windows one because the code doesn’t seem to be optimised for altivec or other PPC features. I don’t know any details but i’m sure that Renoise could be WAY faster on a G4 that the way it is now. That’s a point that could be improved in the future.

I’d recommend u to wait for the mini-PC (from Intel) that is about to be revealed soon which is about the same size as a mac mini but way more powerful. (Pentium M) Stay tuned.

edit : i forgot to mention that Renoise is slow on G4 when using VSTis… if you plan to use samples mostly then it goes fine enough
