my notebook is going to break soon, i think. i dont have the money to buy a new one , the moment. but i have this Sony PS3 with the option to install alternative os’s. Linux would be possible.
Wondering if someone already tried that out or if its possible, any infos are welcome
I was also curious about this myself last year, so I experimented with installing Ubuntu on my PS3. To be quite honest, it was a pretty big waste of time. When I finally managed to get Ubuntu configured somewhat nicely, it became painfully obvious that the PS3 itself just isn’t designed to work as a traditional computer. It is seriously lacking in RAM, and thanks to Sony placing restrictions on the video card Linux cannot use the PS3’s 3D accelerated hardware. Overall the entire OS felt incredibly slow and sluggish, so next I tried Xubuntu, which is designed to run better on low end computers. Even with the fugly basic features offered by Xubuntu, the whole OS just felt slooooooow and unresponsive. I really didn’t have the patience to continue fighting with it, so I have no idea if Renoise would have worked or not. In the end, all I managed to do was some web browsing and IRC, which was a novelty in itself, but definitely not worth all the hassle it took to get Linux working.
