Don’t kid yourself… nondestructive editing most often takes up MORE hard drive space. It also uses more CPU during playback.
How so? I understand the CPU part of it.
Every edit you make needs to be stored somewhere 
… if you’re applying effects and such, it needs to store additional sample chunks to represent that. If you’re pasting in new data… same thing. The only time it would be less is if you’re simply changing gain or cutting chunks out.
